Because of Trupanion, My Dog Didn't Die of Cancer
In 2014 my Black Lab mix was diagnosed with bladder cancer and liver cancer. She had no symptoms; the tumors were found by accident through an annual exam. Kelly was born on my laundry room floor along with 7 other litter mates after I had rescued her fearful mother, Maggie, just 4 days earlier. The litter had to be bottle fed every 2 hours and Kelly was the runt - this would become the toughest rescue I would ever encounter. But my rewards would last for 13 years and 42 days.
Two important factors guided my decision to pursue chemotherapy treatment for Kelly: she had excellent health insurance with Trupanion and despite her actual age, she had the energy of a 7 year old. So she first had surgery to remove the tumors in her bladder and on her liver, & then after she healed we started chemo with an Oncologist in Indianapolis.
After 3 months of chemo, I needed to go back east to Baltimore so Kelly continued her chemo out east with a different Oncologist. Trupanion had no problem with the fact that we were switching back and forth between vets in different states. Reimbursements were even quicker when a Trupanion employee to me about direct deposit into my checking account. They make it so easy - no more delays and taking a check to the bank.
There was a 3 month period of time that Kelly was in remission in early 2015, but then the bladder cancer slowly came back. So we started up a different course of chemo just to slow the bladder cancer down. Around this point, Kelly's medical bills were around $15,000.00. For both Maggie & Kelly I had $0 deduction with 90% reimbursement with Trupanion, so although their premiums were the highest on the scale it turned out to be the best choice overall.
During the summer of 2015 Kelly's Indianapolis Oncologist moved out of state, so our next best choice was the Oncology department at Purdue University Veterinary School of Medicine 1.5 hrs away. Kelly was still holding her own, eating well, & I was looking forward to working the Vet who was the leading authority on canine bladder cancer in the country.
Three days before Kelly was to start chemo at Purdue she passed away - not of cancer, but of a bleeding stomach ulcer caused by one of the cancer pills she was prescribed. A part of my heart left with her.
In total, Kelly's cancer bills totaled $25,800.00. Without Trupanion, I would never have that last year with Kelly. Trupanion was great.
I have 5 rescued dogs right now, and you never know their me

Above and beyond our expectations!
Can't say enough good things about Healthy Paws pet insurance. Amazing customer service, always polite and extremely helpful! Our dog blew out her knee and had to have an expensive surgery, they had our claim processed and completed within 24 hrs of her surgery. It's also extremely easy to submit claims. I've recommended them to everyone!

so far, so good
no complaints. Easy to file, quick response. Still an on going problem with my dog, Skittles. I'm told she will need a MRI, however the steroids are helping. When she tries to run she drags her hind legs. I am worried about her but having Embrace health insurance by my side I feel a little better, like we both want her to get better. I really think it was a good decision to get insurance, after all, my dogs are family too!!
