The Unique and Personal Approach

I am from Vancouver, BC Canada so I used to have policy with Vet Insurance in Canada with my last dog Pepper, the beagle. Pepper went through so many health problems and had a couple of big operations. When Pepper was 8 years old, I was newly divorced and hard to keep up with his medical bills everytime he needed vet care. Vet Insurance was the only pet isurance company accepted my application for enrollment although the others denied my application because Pepper was too old. He had two big life threatening surgeries, and one was spleen rupture when Pepper was 10. My bills was astonomical. However, thanks to Vet Insurance, it was 90% covered, and I didn't have to worry about going broke. Instead, I was able to focus on taking care of him. I give a huge credit to Vet Insurance for helping Pepper prolong his life and live happy, not to mention give me peace of mind. He passed away last year, but our vet told me it was miracle that he outlived 5 more years of borrowing time after the big surgery. During late years of Pepper, I was re-married and moved to US. After Pepper's passing, we thought we would never have another pet because of dealing with pet's loss. My husband was surfing Craigslist to look for something else and found ad for beagle puppy for adoption. We called up the original ownder and met the puppy. We fell in love with him instanteneously. That was not our plan to have another pet, but we could not help ourselves. He was born on Halloween and we picked him up on Friday the 13th (of February) so we re-named him Lucky for good luck. He is a loving happy dog. Thanks to wonderful experience with Vet Insurance I knew I have to get insurance for him so I began to research for pet insurance company in US. And I was so extatic to find out that Vet Insurance opened a company for US market called Trupanion. I knew Trupanion will give me great coverage at very competitive rate as well as excellent customer service just like Vet Insruance. And I was right. Trupanion offer very unique coverage that fits to anybody's budget and circumstances. Very simple to file claim and fast to get reinbursement check. And they will personally take good care of you. They follow up each claim and keep you updated by calls and e-mails. The representatives are very sinsere and care about you and your pets. I am very happy with Trupanion. Lucky is just a puppy, and he has many years to go so I am very confident that through Trupanion, we can provide him the best medical care without any finincial stress from big expenses when unexpected illness or accident occurs in the future. With Trupanion, we can keep Lucky happy and waggling his tail for a long time. In my opinion, Vet Insurance / Trupanion is the best in the market. I recommend to all my friends and family. If you have older pets, it is not too late to enroll. Please protect your pet and be stress free from enexpected future medical expenses for your pet with Trupanion.

Slow claim service

I've submitted several claims (the oldest dating back to late August, more than 5 weeks ago) and have yet to receive resolution on any of them. They did not make good on their promise of a 15-day response and they have not been very communicative. Each time I inquire about the status of the claims I hear that they are very busy, they're sorry, etc. I chose Embrace largely due to the positive reviews I saw on this site. I have yet to see anything to support those reviews.

Avoid. Over priced and difficult to deal with

Pets Best is expensive relative to its peers and the customer service is atrocious. Unlike Embrace or Purina Care, they exclude anything they consider to be hereditary or congenital (list is more exhaustive then you might think), regardless of the age of your pet, or whether they have ever shown any symptoms. This includes hip and elbow displaysia, for some breeds eye problems like glaucoma/ cataracts, Addison's disease etc. In addition, they exclude patella or other knee injuries for the first year (Purina and Embrace do not). These are not only the most likely health problems for a young pet. They are also the expensive ones you most need insurance for! Plus if you think about it, for most minor illnesses, after the $75 PER INCIDENT deductable and the 20% co-pay, you end up paying the vast majority of the cost of most vet visits yourself anyway. On top of that, they will nitpick every last thing related to a claim. This includes claims related to their "routine care option" which they seem to treat as a benefit as opposed to an entitlement (despite their false marketing). If their "claims department" finds any issue no matter how remote, be prepared for them to deny the claim and then push it back to you and your vet to do all the work necessary to appeal. This process is designed to be difficult and is a major time sink for you and for your vet, who understandably find it irritating. All in all, if you buy Pets Best, be prepared to pay upfront and then have to fight for your money, waste your time and be disappointed later.

Fantastic!

I have only had Pets Best for a few months, but have been extremely impressed with their service. Within only weeks of getting the insurance, one of our dogs came down with a skin infection. Pets Best sent us a check very quickly and with no problem. We had two other somewhat expensive procedures after this (unrelated), which were also handled quickly and efficiently. The staff was friendly and helpful whenever I would call to ask a question. One of our dogs ended up dying from an aneurism, and Pets Best paid for his cremation. They also sent us a nice sympathy card, which was unexpected and very sweet. So far, we are very impressed and will definately continue to put future dogs on this insurance.

Trupanion Exceptional Prompt Claim Service

I have two Briards insured with Trupanion. What stands out for me is Trupanion's exceptional personalized service. I have always been contacted by my claim representative promptly on making the claim, a status follow up and even more importantly very prompt resolution of the claim! I have only had best experiences with Trupanion. Such personal service is rare today. It's all about the dogs not a negotiation for coverage!

They do not reimburse

We have 16 month old dog who was just diagnosed with heartworm. Dogs under one year do not get tested for heartworm. Trupanion is claiming we didnt give our dog heartguard and we allowed this to happen. How are we to know if the dig was never tested prior to this? Therefore they are denying our claim. They have also denied us two other claims, one for Giardia and another for eating grapes. The grapes was supposedly a preexisting condition because she ingested gorilla glue a few months prior. Not 100% related. Three claims and three denials later we will switch back to our old carrier who never denied us. We left becasue nupanion was supposedly cheaper and covers 90%. They may be cheaper per month but not cheaper in the long run. Id rather pay a higher premium and have a lower reimbursement. TRUPANION IT TERRIBLE DO NOT USE THEM. Their customer service dept has not called me back either.

deductible per incident not per year - bad policy

After having lost two dogs in the past year who were uninsured, we were determined to insure our new puppies. One big problem I have with Pets Best is that their deductibles are per incident not, as with AKC, per year. Most of the claims we have filed have been denied due to not meeting the deductible on those issues. Also, Pets Best doesn't cover preventative medicine like heartwork. AKC does cover preventative medicine. I am very tempted to switch to AKC. On a positive, Pets Best has had a very good response time.
