The Second Claim
We just had our second claim. Our doggie was limping quite a bit after vigorous play and, after a visit late last year, we took him back to our vet. Embrace is paying what they promised they would in a timely fashion. I don't think you can ask for much more.

I wish they insured humans too.
Typically I have very little trust in insurance companies so I was extremely skeptical on if I should insure my yorkie puppy Rupert. I went back and forth with the idea and finally settled on the $50 deductable, 90% coverage plan. We recently had to take Rupert to the emergency room for something, (we're still not positive what it was) and the bill was more than I could afford. Healthy Paws covered exactly everything they said they were going to. The customer service was amazing. The claims process was extremely easy. They processed my claim quickly and I had my payment in hand 2 weeks after the claim was filed. I'm sad to say that my dog's health insurance company is better than mine. I would reccommend this company to anyone with a pet. Its SO worth it! You always think that you're not going to need it, but eveyrthing can change in a matter of a second and its always when you need it the least. I wish every company I had to deal with on a daily basis was as good as Healthy Paws. A company that does what they say they're going to do.... imagine that!!!!

122% Increase in Premiums in Less Than A Year!
I have had Trupanion for almost a year and I just received notice that my premiums are increasing from $42.70/mo. to $94.97/mo. That's an increase of 122%!! Their justification for the premium hike is an "increase in medical costs."
This argument is completely unfounded for the following reasons:
1). My dog sees 2 different local vets and neither one of them have increased their rates.
2). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics ("BLS") annually publishes the Consumer Price Index (CPI) summarizing the average costs to U.S. consumers for certain categories of expenses. According to the most recent report, the cost of veterinary care only increased 4.6% from 2010 to 2011. In fact, according to the data on the BLS website, from 2003 to the present, the average cost of vet services has never increased annually more than 6.3%.
So how does Trupanion justify an increase in my premium of 122% when the national average for increased vet care is only 4.6%? In my opinion, they don't. Other customers have posted similar complaints on this website about premium increases. Here is one of Trupanion's responses:
"if you compare our most recent rates with our competitors' rates, you will see that we are in the same ballpark for pricing." (See http://www.petinsurancereview.com/reviewComment.asp?ID2=1300&ID1=15639)
This statement, true or not, is completely irrelevant. When I signed up for my policy, I was promised the "rates will occasionally be adjusted to reflect

55% premium increase
After one year of membership at $34 per month my premium was hiked up by 55% to $74 per month. I was told they were wanting to raise the prices for the past few years but the state of CA regulation office would not approve the hike till now 2/8/2012.

Definitely Worth Having Insurance
My Dog is now five years old but has definitely gotten himself in a lot of situations that cost a hefty hospital bill for me. But thank god to Embrace they are always so helpful and always available to answer all my questions. I am so glad to have insurance for my dog. It definitely pays and has made me not have to pay everything out of pocket. For example the $5000.00 hospital bill for a surgery he had to have because he ate a piece of plastic from his chewy toy. Embrace paid $3500.00 of that bill. I definitely recommend them!!

So Far So Good!!!
We got Embrace insurance for our new puppy in Nov 2011. We have been very happy with the processing of all of our claims so far. Our puppy ate 15 rocks the second week we had her, and have now met our deductible for the year should she decide to eat something else she shouldn't!!! We also have wellness visit coverage and the re-reimbursement has been great for all her shots, flea meds etc.
