Major Medical
My German Shepherd had an abcess in his jaw and needed the tooth removed and lots of antibiotics - it was over $700.00. Sunny and Cassie were breeder dogs and Sunny had surgery worth over $900.00 for a mammary gland infection, Cassie had terminal cancer and her final bill was over $900.00. So, yes the insurance helped me. It takes a really long time to process the claims though, usually at least three months, which I think is an excessively long time.

Quick reimbursement
They are quick to send a reimbursement check. Takes about a week, on average. I have also used the online chat with Trupanion, and they are both helpful and friendly.

I tested. ASPCA passed.
I have four pets - i decided to insure one as a test of the insurance program itself. The insurance terms were clear; i thought if i ever needed to file for it, i would know whether the plan was worth the investment as compared to just paying vet bills if/when they arose. turned out the pet i insured needed a lot of tests. ASPCA paid just as the contract said, and they paid quickly, over $500.
I immediately enrolled the other three. it is worth it to me to know that i need never delay or dread a vet visit.
i'm totally convinced of the value.

Worth having
My Shih Tzu came down with a stomach bug a few months ago. With my pet health insurance, it's comforting to know that I don't have to worry about my finances when I'm busy worrying about my best friend.
My vet recommended the ASPCA Insurance and so far things have been great. My claim was processed quickly and I even received a follow-up call asking how my pet was doing. Overall, it's been a very positive experience.

Pros and Cons
We live in the Washington DC area where pet care is quite expensive. As such, most of the charges are above the allowable amounts allowed by ASPCA. Our reimbusement is usually around 50% of the claim. We have a dog with glaucoma and recently she suffered from keratitis and needed surgery. Our ophthalmologist strongly stated that the two conditions are unrelated. I have submitted claims which have not yet been processed, so I don't know what the result will be.
We bought insurance when our dog was approximately 12 years old and have not used it much. Only two claims have been processed in two years. I feel some comfort in having pet insurance, but until recently have not needed to use it. It is difficult for me to rate ASPCA since my experience has been limited. I actually am glad that it has been limited.
One thing I have been disappointed in is the processing time. Telephone assistance is always very good.

Smooth process and I got 90% Refund
My Olde English Bulldogge, Nabuco, started limping for no apparent reason. I took him to a specialty hospital (without a referral) where they x-rayed his front legs. The doctor found nothing was wrong with him and had a radiologist check out the x-rays and found nothing either.
I thought my claim would be denied because according to 2 vets, nothing was wrong with Nabuco. But I still emailed my claim (only a claim form, Nabuco's record, invoice & receipt).
In less than 10 days my claim was approved!!! The bill w/o the exam fee was $362 and Trupanion reimbursed $325.80!!!
