After raising children and grandchildren, we picked a kitten out for us in our retirement years. She is loving, playful and smart. When we had our regular vet exam, he asked how often she threw up. We reported she threw up 1-2 times a month. He did a sonogram on the spot and detected a thickening of her small intestines. He suspected it could be cancer or Irritable Bowel Syndrome, which if neglected could lead to cancer. It was alarming and so upsetting that our Addie would only live a short time or require complex treatment even if it wasn't cancer. We tracked her vomiting which increased from twice to 8 times only two months later. The vet performed surgery and sent samples of the bowel for study. That surgery was $1700.00, something we could not afford on our fixed income. There was a complex regime that followed to rule out any other cause of her vomiting, again expensive. The biopsy results were negative for cancer, thankfully, but we still had to find the protocol for her nutrition, probiotics, and vitamins to safe guard her health and give her the best possible quality of life for as long as possible. A couple years ago, my husband and I decided to get pet insurance for our dogs because, having no kids of our own, our dogs are our family and we want to ensure we are always able to give them the care they deserve. We never want to have to make a decision to put them to sleep because we can't afford care. So, I started doinn research. I admit, I was a bit disheartened at what I saw at first. Most insurance companies won't cover some types of illness or injury that are "typical" of a breed... such as hip dysplasia in large breeds. Having a German Shepherd, this was a let down. Or their definition of a "pre-existing condition" is anything they had before the start of the CURRENT policy.. meaning, from year to year, you have a new policy and anything your dog had the previous year (even while being insured) has now become a pre-exiting condition. This too was frustrating. And then I found Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. What they offer is so good that I found myself reading through the policy multiple times because it seemed too good to be true! First, they cover hip dysplasia if it occurs. Second, after only a $250 they will cover 90% of the cost! And they even let you send in your smaller bills throughout the year and keep track of how much your deductible you have used. After being a insurance broker for 45 years I know a good carrier and this is one. Have had coverage for 2 yrs. in second year have had my first claim . They did a professional job . I'm happy so is my dog everything worked out for best outcome she OK ,I did get reimbursed as per my policy conditions .

When we got our first dog my dog owner friends all told me to get her insured right away. I've only had cats and never even heard of getting insurance for them. But I took my friend's advice, shopped around and chose Embrace. I liked what I read and I also liked that they were a local (Midwestern) company. So far so good. It took me a while to understand what the "wellness" portion covered and what the "insurance" portion covered, now that I've got that figured out, it's all good. We use the Wellness portion more... for routine exams, shots, flea & heartworm meds and even nail trimming, we have a tooth cleaning coming up soon and it will pay for that too...anything that is considered prevention. And you get reimbursed in full. We've only had to use the insurance part a couple of times for an illness and an injury, and that's not as good because it usually just goes to your deductible. When it will pay off is when we (heaven forbid) have a major expense with our doggie. Hope we never have to find out,but it's good to have just in case. Sometimes it takes a little long to get the claim through, other times it's really fast. Guess it just depends on their volume. Laura is good and always checks in to make sure we received our check. I adopted a 6-month puppy August, 2012. After spending quite a bit of money sugically to fix a pre-existing broken foot condition, I decided to get pet insurance for my little boy. I scrutinized every pet health care plan available and decided upon Healthy Paws due to their overall coverage of medical issues and excellent pricing. My little boy recently needed surgery to remove growths in his mouth. Healthy Paws approved the claim within two days, and I received a reimbursement check exactly one week after his surgery. I did my research and after year decided on Healthy Paws. I have two babies, Bunny & Twinkie, both Shih-tzu's and they are very precious to my husband & I. Bunny got 3 foxtails in her ear and was in terrible pain. Took her to emergency and a follow-up with our own vet the following day and in less than 2 weeks received a reimbursement check from Healthy Paws. They also sent me an email asking if I needed anything else and asked how Bunny was doing. They actually care about their customers pets. I haved already told several people about their service and caring attitude. I hope to not have to file another claim but if I do I know that they will be prompt in their response.

This was the first time I ever acquired pet insurance and am so glad I did. We have had many pets in the past and didn't have insurance for them and it would have been a great benefit in all of their lives. I have had several different pet insurance companies over the years. Every time I filed a claim - it would be denied for some reason or another. I just filed my first claim with Healthy Paws. It was reviewed QUICKLY, I received a personal phone call explaining everything to me - what was going to be covered, what/reason for something being denied. I sent in a claim to Healthy Paws the day after my dog was bitten by another dog in the dog park and needed surgery for a large neck wound. They responded the next day to tell me my claim was being reviewed and the next email I got was their settlement amount. I had a check before the end of the week.
