Business first, care about your pet second.

Trupanion has proven to offer truly terrible coverage. We pay way too much (about $45 per month) for absolutely no coverage considering they will claim everything and anything pertains to a pre-existing condition. My dog swallowed a tack once when he was a 5 month old puppy, fast forward 1.5 years later and he has not had any recurrent ingestion of foreign material, however, he recently got ill with a violent barking cough. The emergency vet told us to bring him in to rule out gastric volvulus (life-threatening condition). In order to rule out this condition, X-Rays and other diagnostic labs, services were employed. Turned out he had kennel cough and all other tests were negative after a $750 workup. We submitted the claim to TruPanion, knowing we have a $500 deductible per injury/illness, which is also a horrible policy, but regardless were hoping to be reimubrsed at least the $250 after deductible. I was utterly shocked when our claim was denied due to Trupanion claiming this all pertained to a pre-existing condition of our dog as he has a supposed "recurrent pattern of ingestion of foreign material." After speaking with the treating veterinarian, who agrees this is also a ridiculous theory, I am in the process of a lengthy appeal due to Trupanion's inability to handle any claim in a timely manner, in conjunction with their negligence to provide care for an animal on a condition utterly and completely unrelated to ingestion of a foreign material. The treating veterinarian has even said they obtained the imaging to rule out gastric volvulus, with ingestion of foreign material extremely low on the differential diagnosis. Trupanion simply works with all their power to avoid paying any possible reimbursement. The most frustrating piece of this story is this is not new to us, unfortunately. As a puppy, our dog became very ill with a bizarre aseptic meningitis type of picture. After 3 days in an emergency vet with neurologist specialists weighining in on his diagnosis, he was diagnosed with SRMA (steroid responsive meningitis arteritis) after a nearly 7k workup. He has been completely fine since and has not had any recurrences thank goodness. However, this episode all started on day 28 of our policy with Trupanion. You should know Trupanion has a STRICT 30 day policy where for the first 30 days after enrollment any injury/illness that occurs is considered a pre-existing condition ( funny, because it certainly did not exist when we signed up for our policy). Regardless, all of our claims at that time were denied by Trupanion. Our vet tried to plead for our case but achieved no favorable result either. We ended up maxing out our credit cards and dipping into our savings to cover it because what else would you do with your supposedly dying 4 month old golden retriever puppy. The most frustrating part of that incident was we had HAD coverage for the first month we had our dog with AKC insurance and then switched to Trupanion because we THOUGHT (clearly, wrongly) that it would be better coverage. Thus, we never had a lapse in insurance coverage however Trupanion stated they counted the 30 days starting when we enrolled with them, and excluded the 30 days of our AKC coverage prior. Honestly, I think this company is a business first, and cares very little about your actual pets or their well-being and i would steer clear.

Terrible coverage, pay way too much for absolutely no coverage considering they will claim everything pertains to a pre-existing condition. My dog swallowed a tack once when he was a 5 month old puppy, has not had a "recurrent" pattern of this. He is now 2 years old and has not done anything like this since < 6 months old. Yet, when he was taken to an emergency vet for concern for gastric volvulus due to hacking, X-rays were obtained in workup and after 750 dollar workup was determined he just had kennel cough. These charges were denied due to "pre-existing condition" of foreign object ingestion as a puppy. Now I am in the process of a length appeal due to Trupanion's inability to handle any claim in a timely manner, in conjunction with their negligence to provide care for an animal on a condition utterly and completely unrelated to ingestion of a foreign material. The treating veterinarian has even said they obtained the imaging to rule out gastric volvulus, with ingestion of foreign material extremely low on the differential diagnosis. Trupanion simply tries to skirt out of any possible reimbursement. This is not new to us, unfortunately. As a puppy, our dog became very ill, was later diagnosed with SRMA (steroid responsive meningitis arteritis) after a nearly 7k workup. This all occurred on day 28 of our policy with Trupanion, despite having coverage with AKC insurance before for the first month we had him. Thus, we never had a lapse in insurance coverage however due to Trupanion's stringest 30day preexisting condition policy, all charges were denied. Honestly, I don't even know why we pay the outrageous fee every month to have zero coverage when it has really mattered in the past. We will be switching insurance shortly, in the process of searching better alternatives.

This has been a super stressful couple days for us as we worried about our kitten and then figured out with her provider that she needed surgery. Im so grateful for how kind and patient everyone at Trupanion was and how compassionate they were with me during an emotional day. This is a big bill that would have hit our family really hard and everybody was really reassuring as we figured out pre-approval and bills.

Torn ACL - covered!

My dog has fortunately been very healthy so far, but recently tore her ACL chasing a deer. I did intensive research and eliminated the common but extremely painful and controversial TPLO/TTA surgery types (where they cut and alter leg bones) in favor of a less painful - but more expensive - procedure called QLF from a Mass. specialist.. This is really important because the QLF is more expensive up front but has a much lower chance of causing injury to the other knee/leg. I decided that even if, for some crazy reason, it was not covered, it was worth the extra expense (and travel). Success! QLF was still covered at the 90% Trumpanion that promises. My dog is recovering well. Another reason why it is so important to have dog health insurance is that, most people may not be able to afford a $5000 knee surgery for their dog. Their dog will then limp their way through life, and end up with other injuries and serious arthritis due to the unstable gait they are forced to live with - which causes yet more expenses. By having health insurance, this stops one bad injury from turning into 3,4 or 5 others. Very happy customer.
