Trupanion pets lead longer happier lives.1 Pets insured with Trupanion lived longer than pets without Trupanion because pet parents didn’t have to worry about the cost of the care their pet needed. Depending on the plan Trupanion covers up to 90% of eligible expenses, has unlimited payouts-always, and can pay your vet bill, within seconds, at time of checkout, so all you pay is your portion (anything not covered by Trupanion). They have transformed the way pet insurance handles claims by eliminating the reimbursement process.
Trupanion was founded in Canada and provides bets-in-class coverage and is dedicated to helping pets we love get the care they need. They’ve been around for more than 20 years, making them experts and setting standards for the industry. One perk of this, and what they pride themselves on, is the amount they pay out to pet owners for each claim. Paying out more on the dollar than any other pet insurance provider. To date they have paid out $2 Billion in claims and have insured nearly 1 million pets.
To put it simply, there is a reason why 98.7% of Trupanion members stay enrolled every month.

I am disappointed in Trupanion's services.
I have a cat and I have insurance with Trupanion for many years. This company makes every effort not to pay insurance when it comes to paying the claim. They found different reasons as to why it is not covered. My cat has a diarrhea condition, on and off, and we claimed 3 times for the same reason. As per policy, the Truponion is saying that I have a deductible amount that I have to pay for injury or illnesses and that this deductible is paid only one time for lifelong conditions.
so, the condition is diarrhea, and i paid the deductible of 26.20 CAD on the Feb. 23, 2022 claim, then I paid 100 CAD on a claim from Feb. 27, 2022 (shows remaining deductible is 173.80 CAD)
Now, in 2023, 1.5 years later, my cat again got diarrhea that was treated with the same medication, but as per the customer service representative, I have to pay my 300 deductible starting again as diarrhea in 2022 does not relate to diarrhea in 2023. How it even can be possible?
How then the lifelong illness can be described? My understanding that if it says one time pay for lifelong condition, i have to pay once for life condition, does not matter how many times this condition will repeat, it is still one condition. Diarrhea is diarrhea, it cannot be something else.
But NO, Trupanion is always trying to find a reason to NOT pay you. And also the process of paying or investigating your claim is sooo long, last claim happened in November 2023, and the answer i got end of December 2023, further investigation was almost 2 months, finally got the answer with a different reason for not to pay the claim.
Sincerely,
Tatyana Goncharenko
For one of the top tier pet insurance companies out there, they really try their best to take every dollar from you. My dog has been to the vet for the same ongoing issue 4 times over the past 2 years and still gets charged a deductible for the same issue. My vet submits an appeal but Trupanion always comes back with, the vet could not provide sufficient amount of a medical connection between the visits, therefore you will be charged a deductible. Last visit to the vet cost me $480 and got back $111 and I wasn't charged a deductible this time.
Edit Feb 2024: Reduced to 1 star when my 14 month old puppy's insurance also increased by 40% with one $550 claim and he's been insured with Trupanion since he was 3½ months.
Initial review:
If I could give 3.5 stars, I would.
Trupanion has been fantastic about covering unexpected veterinary bills. Probably $8-10k for one of our doggos who is still able-bodied partly due to our pet insurance policy. Unfortunately, our premiums went up about 30% since we began coverage in 2019. I'm led to believe this is due to some complex equation that considers the costs of veterinary expenses for cohorts in my area. Trupanion is clear that submitting claims will not cause rate increases.... I'm struggling to believe that but everything seems to be outrageously expensive since 2020 so what can I really say. It's just a bit disappointing. Having said all of that, I'm not aware of a better pet insurance company.
Trupanion is the best insurance for your fur babies, they are so worth it, I have 3 dogs, and I never have to worry about their health care. It's better than my own health Insurance company.
Pros
-They have nice customer service
-Unlimited payouts
Cons
-High prices due to unlimited payouts
-Will try to blame everything on pre-existing conditions like allergies other injuries etc
-Extremely frequent rate increases - twice a year?
-They are cheap when you first sign up and then they raise the price dramatically over the years, which limits your ability to get a more cost-effective pet insurance option as your pet has aged by the time you realize trupanion jacks up their prices dramatically
Monthly cost varies due to multiple factors including: species, breed, age at enrollment, gender, and postal code.

Deductible
You can choose your deductible from $0 – $1000, in $5 increments, to fit your budget.

Age Limits
All pets under 14 years old can enroll.
Once enrolled, pets stay insured regardless of age.
Waiting Period
Accidents: 5 days
Illnesses: 30 days

Exclusions
Trupanion was developed to protect you and your pet from unexpected illnesses and injuries. That means we don’t cover “predictable” care costs that you can plan ahead for, like:
Examination fees
Wellness and preventive care
Elective, or cosmetic procedures
Sales tax, where applicable
Like all pet insurance providers, Trupanion does not cover pre-existing conditions. Whichever insurer you choose, it pays to enroll early!
