Stay away from this company. If you ever make the same mistake I did and sign up, make sure you don’t see a vet for the first 30 days. My puppy was itchy one day. I thought he might be having a reaction to something or a bad bug bite. They used this symptom of itchiness to deny him coverage for allergy testing later on, saying he has allergies as a pre-existing condition, even after requesting and receiving a letter from my vet stating he was too young to have developed allergies at the time of his initial examination for itchiness. what a catch 22. Denied coverage for claiming he has allergies when they won’t even cover testing to see if he has any. I’m in too deep to back out now and they constantly jack up the monthly rates. Do yourself a favour and avoid this company.
We couldn’t care for our dogs the way they deserve without Trupanion.

TRUPANION IS BEYOND WONDERFUL!!!!!!!
I can't say enough good things about Trupanion!!!!! I remember back in the day wondering if we should do insurance. What a no brainer that was! We have used Trupanion multiple times and everyone would say there was no way they would continue with our claims. Well they were WRONG! i can't get over how great they have been. Trupanion continues to honor their contract as stated. My Newfoundland has had 2 major surgeries in one year and they covered both.....along with multiple visits to the dermatologist. If you are wondering about insurance and who to use, I would recommend to the fullest...TRUPANION!!!!

Relief to have coverage!
We were blindsided by a condition I had never heard of in our puppy. It could have cost us thousands to have his shoulders repaired and to give him the comfortable life he deserved. The process was extremely smooth and the customer service was excellent! Thank you again for making this part an easy process.

Misleading exclusions and bad communication
Trupanion miscommunicated (or perhaps downright lied) about preexisting condition exclusions, so now that I am leaving them I have much fewer options for my older pets, and I have paid plenty of premiums to them and never gotten a dime in coverage. (Which I understand is sometimes how insurance works if you don't need it, but we did and they failed, miserably.)
Feb 2018: I move to Canada from the US. My prior pet insurance company doesn't exist here. But Trupanion does! I sign up. My pets have no huge issues, though one has had a tooth extracted for periodontal disease.
Aug. 2018: That same pet needs more extractions. I call Trupanion, trying to budget for whether/when to do it at the vet. They tell me he's actually fine, his teeth are not excluded! Pleasantly surprised, I go ahead with the procedure.
A month or so later: LOL no. Claim denied in full. Reason? Pre-existing periodontal disease. I call Trupanion and express significant displeasure. They explain, in excruciating condescending detail, how pre-existing condition exclusions work. I tell them I know this but I asked them beforehand so I could budget and they told me we were fine. I ask something about the wording of the vet record that has the prior condition on it, and they ask if I've engaged in medical fraud. (I haven't, I've told them all prior vets, I'm just sick of their jargon.) Sooo that's fun.
I calm down and decide to stay with them. I understand why the exclusion was applied, it just wasn't communication well, and like I guess they have to be on guard against fraud or whatever.
A year later, my cat who never had periodontal disease previously prior shows signs of it and needs extractions. I go ahead with them, confident that he, at least, is covered.
HIS CLAIM IS DENIED. REASON? HE HAD TARTAR ON HIS TEETH ONCE PREVIOUSLY.

I sign up with a local Ontario pet insurance association as soon as I can and cancel Trupanion. I inform them as to why several days beforehand and get no response (I basically tell them to hold the legalese, I understand they have the legal right to do what they did but they are terrible at what they do and I will be canceling... I guess if they can't come back at you with legalese they don't see a point in responding).
Anyway, buy at your own risk. Good thing I can have tartar on my teeth and still get dental coverage. I shudder to think what this company does when your pet is actually sick.

Payout Limits
Unlimited lifetime payouts on eligible conditions with no payout limits-ever.
Deductible
You can choose your deductible from $0 – $1000, in $5 increments, to fit your budget.
Trupanion offers a lifetime, per condition deductible meaning that once the deductible is met for an eligible condition, you never have to meet it again. That condition is covered for life. This is great for chronic conditions that can span the entirety of a pet’s life such as allergies or cancer.
Age Limits
All pets under 14 years old can enroll.
Once enrolled, pets stay insured regardless of age.
Waiting Period
Accidents: 5 days
Illnesses: 30 days
Other providers may have additional waiting periods for congenital conditions like hip dysplasia, Trupanion does not.
Exclusions
Trupanion was developed to protect you and your pet from unexpected illnesses and injuries. That means we don’t cover “predictable” care costs that you can plan ahead for, like:
Examination fees
Wellness and preventive care
Elective, or cosmetic procedures
Sales tax, where applicable
