TERRIBLE / Worst experience

I am so very disappointed in Trupanion. My dog Cooper was playing and torn his ACL, which required surgery. I had just recently purchased the policy, but was relieved to discover that because it was an accident it would be covered. The claim was denied saying i wasn't in the grace period. I contacted them and resubmitted it. It was denied because they said the ACL tear was a 'pre - existing' condition. My vet was furious with Trupanion and called them and emailed several times. My dog is 2, in excellent health and has had zero problems before this. My vet and I took it to the third step and had a 3rd party appeal. They denied it also, they said MY VET agreed that it was a pre existing condition, which she didn't. I have all of the emails and paperwork and am escalating this to the California Insurance Commissioner. This was a $4000 bill that should have been covered.

Excellent Response on Claim

Trupanion responded to my claim within a week and I received a reimbursement check within a week and a 1/2. I truly recommend them to cover unexpected health expenses. My puppy was only 5 months old when it suddendly had an illness which cost almost $6,000. Thank goodness for insurance!

Prompt service

We submitted many claims for our now diabetic cat. Trupanion always sumits a detailed review of the claim and follows promptly with the payment. Trupanion is open to communication in case of questions or clarification.

Very fast claim processing and payment

My dog got nasal cancer and Trupanion was there every step of the way when I needed it the most. Trupanion paid for all the tests and treatments including radiation.

Disappointed

I recently had a $5000 claim denied, the only one I had filed in over a year of coverage with multiple pets. The reason they gave for denying the claim was a stretch, at best, saying it was related to a single vet visit my dog had two years ago, taken in for a completely unrelated reason, that the vet could not pinpoint a diagnosis but basically said well, we'll treat her for this because of her breed. I even appealed the claim with a letter from the current vet who did her recent surgery, showing the two incidents weren't connected, and they still denied it. As a vet tech, I know it was not a pre existing condition, and am more than disappointed in their decision. I will say that they had an easy claims process, a quick response time, and pleasant customer service, but all that doesnt make insurance worth it if they wont cover my pets when they should. Coverage cancelled.

Payout Limits

Unlimited lifetime payouts on eligible conditions with no payout limits-ever.

Deductible

You can choose your deductible from $0 – $1000, in $5 increments, to fit your budget. Trupanion offers a lifetime, per condition deductible meaning that once the deductible is met for an eligible condition, you never have to meet it again. That condition is covered for life. This is great for chronic conditions that can span the entirety of a pet’s life such as allergies or cancer.

Age Limits

All pets under 14 years old can enroll. Once enrolled, pets stay insured regardless of age.

Waiting Period

Accidents: 5 days Illnesses: 30 days Other providers may have additional waiting periods for congenital conditions like hip dysplasia, Trupanion does not.

Exclusions

Trupanion was developed to protect you and your pet from unexpected illnesses and injuries.
