Trupanion | Pet Insurance Review

I got Trupanion when my dog was 9 weeks old. I think I used it once in only 6 years. I had been thinking, well it’s a lot of money, my dog is only 6yo, am I doing the right thing paying into this? Then, without warning, my dog became ill. Within two days she went from eating and seeming fine, to being diagnosed with an aggressive, blood cancer. There had been no warning signs. Sadly, by the time she was diagnosed, my dog’s chances of survival and quality of life through aggressive treatment were at almost zero, and she was obviously suffering. We had to let her go and it was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. The ONLY thing that made it slightly more bearable, was knowing because of Trupanion, we could say to the doctors, “whatever you have to do to diagnose and help her, do it!” without thought to the cost. Trupanion really stepped up, approving all procedures, scans and testing within minutes. It was one less thing to worry about. I don’t regret having Trupanion because I know, in our quest to save our baby, we left no stone unturned. Now we have a new puppy and the first thing we did was sign up for a new Trupanion account. Highly recommend.

Scam artists with incredible talent to lie. If you look through the reviews below you will notice that all the 5* reviews are from customers who just signed up and rating that experience, meanwhile all the upset ones leaving 1* and 2* are the ones who had to deal with claims. I wish I did a better research and found all the truthful reviews about Trupanion before signing up. They are first class scam artists. Their big and unique selling point? We will NEVER raise your insurance based on your animal's age like other pet insurance will. That does not mean they won't raise it all the time with any excuse they can come up with and as much as they feel like it. One year into our insurance we still haven't used our insurance at all but they raised our insurance with some bs excuse. All we had just check up's and vaccinations which of course is never ever covered so we were paying for all vet visits plus the insurance. This is what we idiotic pet owners do who love our pets so much we don't question the rules just keep paying through the teeth. But when you truly need the insurance and you have to take your pet to the vet you pray and hope that this insurance company will help you out! It was a worrying day but the vet saves the day, you are happy with the medical outcome, ready to leave the urgent care and there comes the bill of course. "Sorry, but Trupanion doesn't pay for X and Y, oh and Z either" - but the bill still seems to be ok since insurance will cover the rest. You sigh with relief when the receptionist submits the bill right there and then to Trupanion for $1100 and the reply comes back that excluding all the exceptions they will still pay nearly half. Driving home we were thinking that ok this insurance might stlll be worth it. Till the next day when you get a correction email that says "Oh well, hello sucker pet owner! We thought it over and even though you have been paying us all this time for this EXACT kind of emergency, we will only pay 9% and you are responsible for all the rest. Tough luck and have a rotten day!" We got no explanation why they recalculated everything overnight and we have no recourse either. I read from other users online that this is what's to be expected from Trupanion. If there is a case when they do pay into a claim a little bit, soon after they find an excuse to raise the premium to gain back the money they paid out. And by then your pet has the pre- existing condition so you are stuck with this company. That is what I meant about pet insurance being a sticky scam. Apparently if you start your own pet's savings account you are much better off financially than if you buy pet insurance. I wish I had found this NBC News coverage on Trupanion before signed up with them. I can't include a link here but it is an NBC interview titled "As pet insurance becomes more popular, pet owners fret about rising prices, denied claims and long waits for reimbursement" It is very illuminating.
