A necessity for pet lovers, excellent coverage!
My cat Willie was an extraordinary friend and just basically a great cat and as he got older I realized that I wanted to be able to do everything in my power for him if there was some kind of crisis. Taking out pet insurance with Trupanion proved to be one of the best decisions I ever made. I hoped in taking out the policy that I'd never have to use it but just knowing that we were protected in case of accident or serious illness gave me peace of mind, and to me at least it was worth it for that part alone. But earlier this year Willie started having stomach problems, with vomiting, lack of appetite and lethargy. Bad signs. That propelled me (us) into a six-week descent that started with an emergency visit to a smaller pet clinic, repeated trips to my local vet for testing and medications, then finally rushing him to a top flight LA pet hospital for a range of very expensive tests and treatments.
The cost began to build up; the costs of the pet hospital were far more than I ever anticipated, into four figures, and my cat friend was diagnosed with lymphoma. In some cases, those caught early I'd guess, this type of lymphoma can be treatable as a chronic condition in cats; we were not so lucky. Things got worse. After repeated visits to the hospital I finally chose to take him home for in-home euthanasia, a loving if heart-breaking decision. But the fact that I knew I had given Willie the best possible care and we had done everything for him allowed me to do that calmly, and provided enormous peace of mind. After the $1000 deductible, Trupanion paid all the claims in a timely and very professional way, and it was a lot. The biggest challenge, which seemed reasonable to me, was their checking to be sure that all the claims were for the same illness as the claims had different titles as he got diagnosed (other companies tend to tabulate the deductible by calendar year, Trupanion does it by condition).
The illness of a beloved pet is devastating, the stress of how to treat him is enormous. But knowing that I didn't have to choose between my own financial stability and my friend's potentially life-saving treatment let me get through it with my sanity intact. And let me focus on what was best for Willie. If you have many pets, perhaps pet insurance isn't for you. But if you are close to your pet, if you see the relationship as a commitment, and lifelong friendship, pet insurance allows you to plan ahead. Because I have only moderate income I knew I wanted i
