These guys will do anything to deny
These guys will do anything not to cover your pets. We were customers for 2.5 years and in that time were rejected on all but one claim. We knew that was what insurance was for and accepted this until they linked our dog having a rash caused by a cut on his paw to ear infections. They claimed it was likely both were allergies. We're not unreasonable people and entirely understood the potential mistake (allergies could cause both ear infections and a rash BUT this rash was from a cut). Our vet called twice to ensure trupanion that it was impossible these were linked and they still denied us. On that, we dropped coverage. To add insult to injury, they sent us a condescending email saying their actions were "standard in the pet insurance industry." Don't bother with this company, just save $100/month and you'll be better off.
Edits for the public good (because I can't reply to the company's response below): I understand how insurance works - the condescending response below is indicative of how lowly Trupanion thinks of the public. This is a case of a new condition being denied coverage because Trupanion is desperate to link any claim to something so they don't have to pay for it. Our dog never had any rashes before enrollment. Further, our dog never had a cut prior to enrollment. Linking his handful of ear infections to this rash/cut on his paw was a ridiculous ploy. Again, our vet actually took time out of her busy schedule to explain how it was impossible this claim was related to anything prior to enrollment. We went back and forth multiple times and explained this in clear detail. We were told repeatedly that ear infections definitely are related to a rash (again, from a cut) on our dog's paw and thus Trupanion had to deny our claim. Malarky. Would an insurer, in good faith, deny ointment to a human's hand cut on a rock because he/she had previously had an ear infection? Lying to the public and trying to paint me, the customer, as unable to comprehend how insurance works on this forum is a poor show.
