Pumpkin is a pet care company on a mission to make the best pet care possible fur all. Pumpkin was started after its founders took a look at other pet insurance options on the market and found that some were missing one crucial component – preventative care. Pumpkin believes all parents should be able to give their pets medical care if they’re sick or hurt, and preventive care that keeps them healthy throughout their lives.

Beware

Beware: Had high hopes for Pumpkin and thought I did enough research, however the fine print will always get you in the end, that's how these companies survive. Two things to beware of before you might choose this insurance: 1) If you pay for 'preventive care', their package for things like vaccines, wellness exams, parasite meds, etc.. there is mostly ZERO benefit, it is simply giving them the money first and then they pay it out back to you, so they can make interest on your money. It is not Insurance of any kind, if you use the amount you paid for you're done, if you cancel you will owe the money back to them, if you didn't use it and you cancel, well they keep it anyway. Clever!! Now it does say on the screen it isn't insurance however it is pitched like an add on of sorts as you're setting up your insurance... would you like to add preventive care for $10 (or whatever) a month? Sure... later to find out it is completely worthless...the refunds it states you get is your OWN money! 2) Any vaccines that you think are covered or eligible, well if they're two doses, like Lepto for instance, 1 vaccine given in two parts 10 days apart, well to them that's two vaccines so they won't cover the 2nd dose. Ask a vet if this is still one vaccine, of course it is. 3) If you call and question anything, well that's when the rudeness starts, condescending phone techs.. I had one ask me personal questions about what vaccines I have and then hang up on me. Disappointing I had high hopes for them, but everything so far has been misleading, i'd hate to see what it is like for major payouts.

Beware they raise their rates 23% on your 2nd year with them. I was at $85 for the first year, then they automatically renewed at $105. No letter, no warning, no claims filed! I can't figure out how to reply to your response on trustpilot, but I did not receive anything about my rate increase and searched my inbox. I just had flashbacks to car insurance companies who give you a low rate for the first 6 months, then increase it greatly after that intro rate. Insurance companies and their games.

Covered dog's emergency visit and TPLO surgery due to injury/CCL tear

We are lucky we signed up for pumpkin. We talked about it for a while and never did and then decided to right before a trip and an annual checkup with the vet. That week, our dog went to jump on the bed and tore her right CCL and needed TPLO. Had to send pumpkin a million documents from her vet visits, but they covered it. Originally put it on carecredit and completed the claim process which took 7 weeks and then they paid the claim out within the week that they approved it. Unfortunately her left back leg CCL is completely torn now. Hoping they cover this one since it tore compensating for the right side. We have the unlimited plan.

Liars and cheats

Liars and cheats. They denied one of my claims after one of their agents told me that any treatment for trauma to a tooth was covered. Then, they refuse to refund me after I requested to cancel my policy. They LIED to me and told me I never requested to cancel because they ‘listened to the phone recording and didn’t hear that said’. Absolutely unbelievable. I remember 100% saying that I wanted my policy canceled because the dentals were the only reason I got the insurance.

Monthly Cost

Plans start as low as $30 per month. Prices vary based on plan type, pet breed, age, and location.

Coverage

Every pet is covered by a 90% reimbursement rate to make it easier to say “yes” to the best possible care.

Payout Limits

Annual limits of $10,000, $20,000 or unlimited for dogs and $7,000, $15,000 or unlimited for cats.

Deductible

3 options: $100, $250, $500 and $1000

Age Limits

No upper age limits. Pets must be at least 8 weeks old to enroll.

Waiting Period

Insurance coverage begins 14 days after your policy begins for all conditions, including knee/ligament issues where some other policies make you wait 6 months for coverage. No waiting periods for preventive care (in fact, depending on when you received the care, you may be eligible for a retroactive refund).

Exclusions

Pre-existing conditions are not covered. However, unlike some other pet insurances, Pumpkin’s plan covers some curable pre-existing conditions if symptom-free for 180 days, with the exception of knee and ligament conditions. For full terms, visit pumpkin.care/insurancepolicy.
