Avoid. Over priced and difficult to deal with

Pets Best is expensive relative to its peers and the customer service is atrocious. Unlike Embrace or Purina Care, they exclude anything they consider to be hereditary or congenital (list is more exhaustive then you might think), regardless of the age of your pet, or whether they have ever shown any symptoms. This includes hip and elbow displaysia, for some breeds eye problems like glaucoma/ cataracts, Addison's disease etc. In addition, they exclude patella or other knee injuries for the first year (Purina and Embrace do not). These are not only the most likely health problems for a young pet. They are also the expensive ones you most need insurance for! Plus if you think about it, for most minor illnesses, after the $75 PER INCIDENT deductable and the 20% co-pay, you end up paying the vast majority of the cost of most vet visits yourself anyway. On top of that, they will nitpick every last thing related to a claim. This includes claims related to their "routine care option" which they seem to treat as a benefit as opposed to an entitlement (despite their false marketing). If their "claims department" finds any issue no matter how remote, be prepared for them to deny the claim and then push it back to you and your vet to do all the work necessary to appeal. This process is designed to be difficult and is a major time sink for you and for your vet, who understandably find it irritating. All in all, if you buy Pets Best, be prepared to pay upfront and then have to fight for your money, waste your time and be disappointed later.

Fantastic!

I have only had Pets Best for a few months, but have been extremely impressed with their service. Within only weeks of getting the insurance, one of our dogs came down with a skin infection. Pets Best sent us a check very quickly and with no problem. We had two other somewhat expensive procedures after this (unrelated), which were also handled quickly and efficiently. The staff was friendly and helpful whenever I would call to ask a question. One of our dogs ended up dying from an aneurism, and Pets Best paid for his cremation. They also sent us a nice sympathy card, which was unexpected and very sweet. So far, we are very impressed and will definately continue to put future dogs on this insurance.

deductible per incident not per year - bad policy

After having lost two dogs in the past year who were uninsured, we were determined to insure our new puppies. One big problem I have with Pets Best is that their deductibles are per incident not, as with AKC, per year. Most of the claims we have filed have been denied due to not meeting the deductible on those issues. Also, Pets Best doesn't cover preventative medicine like heartwork. AKC does cover preventative medicine. I am very tempted to switch to AKC. On a positive, Pets Best has had a very good response time.

premium increase

I have had Pets Best for a few years now. My dogs are 7 and 13. While I have been with them for the past three years, they have raised my deductible once and have raised my premium cost three times. This past increase was a 31% increase. That is ridiculous and outrageous. I have had to drop my coverage with them in order to maintain the insurance. Unfortunately, I cannot go to another provider because of the age of my older dog and preexisting conditions would apply. I am very disappointed in Pet's Best. They should be ashamed to impose a 31% increase on anyone.

Reliable, Timely Coverage

I have a 9 1/2 year old dog who I recently purchased Pets Best coverage for after the (expensive) and painful loss of her mother in April. Without hesitation, Pets Best covered my dog at this age. I recently took her to her vet for a tumor on her leg. The tumor was mast cell cancer and had to be removed. During surgery, more tumors were found on her spleen and her spleen was also removed. The stress and worry of my dog's cancer was alleviated by Pets Best paying for her surgery so she could receive the care she needed. I was reimbursed very timely and they also paid my balance owed to the vet. I would highly recommend this pet insurance for your dog. This is one of the few companies that covers older dogs at a decent rate.

$6 and up, depending on your chosen plan.

(Available in most states). Two optional Wellness plans to cover routine care. 24/7 Pet Helpline, powered by whiskerDocs is included on all policies. The pay-out amount is based on your actual vet bill.

Payout Limits

Waiting Period

A waiting period refers to the amount of time after enrolling before your pet is eligible for coverage. Waiting periods vary by the type of coverage and start on the effective date of your policy.
