Having pet insurance has helped us multiple times.
Healthy Paws is a wonderful pet insurance company! They have been so easy to work with. Claims are all very easily submitted on the portal through their website. You just upload the itemized invoice and the medical records you receive from your vet. The turnaround time to have check in hand or direct deposit is 10 to 14 days.
Your pet will need to have a medical exam around the time you get the insurance. Most (if not all?) pet insurance companies do not cover claims related to pre-existing conditions. But don't let that stop you as they do cover a lot that can happen in an animal's life...Accident, injury, or illness (not involved with pre-existing). Depending which plan you go with is how much the monthly bill will be. You can easily play with the tool on their website to find out what works for you with regards to percentage payout and deductible and the monthly fee.
We have been insured with them since we got our two rescue pups, Lainy and Jerry, when they were approximately age 1 and 2. At the start, I think we paid around $85/month combined. They are now 8 and 9 years old, and it is now about $100/month combined. So if you only have one pet, depending what plan you choose, likely your monthly will be somewhere between $30-$60.
In 7 years, we have had two major incidents with Jerry as well as several tests to evaluate elevated liver values. Lainy has yet to have a claim. I am so thankful we have had insurance! The first major claim was an accident where he was hit by a car in 2020 and it was a no brainer to take him to emergency as we had insurance. The second major claim was July 2024 where we woke up in the morning, and he suddenly couldn't use his back left leg. By the end of the day, he couldn't use either of his back legs. It was a no brainer! We have insurance and he needs help. We immediately went to emergency. After x-ray, they sent him home with pain pills and a referral to neurology. The next day with no real change, I contacted neurology and they said they only take same-day emergencies and to send them a video of him. Well, they admitted him the same-day. He had an MRI and after discussion of costs (many thousands of dollars) and the plan, he was off to back surgery as he had IVDD, Intervertebral Disk Disease, a disc protruding 50% into his spinal cord. 6 to 8 weeks post-surgery, expectation is 90% recovery with only 10% chance of relapse. Great news! While home recovery has not been easy for me or Jerry, it was well worth it. In these four weeks as I write this, he has returned his ability to walk and go to the bathroom on his own. His tail is wagging and his spirit is strong. We are bonded together stronger than ever. He has a new stroller he loves so we can still go out on long strolls and smell the fresh air and pop out of the stroller to explore on the ground for his mini walks. The length of time allowed for walking will continue to increase.
I am so thankful we had insurance as this made our decision to have the surgery a possibility.
I highly recommend getting and keeping pet insurance. This makes handling major health events so much easier. Our pets truly do become family and having insurance makes caring for them, especially into their elder years, so much easier.
Thank you Healthy Paws!
