I signed up for Healthy Paws Pet Insurance when my Ellie was a puppy. I never thought about pet insurance before until someone recommended it to me. Boy, was that the best recommendation for my Ellie's life. At 2 years old, she started showing signs of major health issues. She had 2 surgeries, has been diagnosed with 3 chronic health issues, and 6 medications daily for the past 10+ years. Healthy Paws has been a life-saver for Ellie. Had we not had this insurance, I'm not sure if Ellie would have lived this long a life. She is 12 now and we just found out she has cancer. Again, we know that Healthy Paws will help us through these next few months with her cancer treatments. I highly recommend Healthy Paws for your pet. Not sure what we would have done without them.
I can’t say enough good things about Healthy Paws Insurance. I’ve had this insurance for my dog, Darla, since she was 1 year old. She is now 10 and had a tumor that needed removing and Healthy Paws paid for the full amount for everything. It was such a gift knowing that I could afford to make the best decisions for her and that I would have help paying for it.
I am one of Healthy Paws original customers, having the same coverage plan (90% with $100 deductible) since 2012.
For context, Healthy Paws was formed in 2009 shortly after co-founder Steve Siadek took a position at a no-kill shelter in after Katrina and wanted to give back. As he stated, "I envisioned Healthy Paws Pet Insurance & Foundation as a way to help both adopted and homeless pets on a national scale." And prior to enrolling with them, I extensively researched options including some of the notable reputable alternatives like Embrace, Pets Best, and Trupanion and immediately excluding some of the bigger players let MetLife and Nationwide, largely due to limitations/schedules. I did not review newer options like Fetch, Figo, and Lemonade as they didn't exist at the time.
My experience for the first few years was tremedous. My dog was a puppy, but my premiums were fair ($40/month?) and I found Health Paws customer service extremely responsive and caring the few times I submitted a claim. Since then, sadly, and especially in light of 2024 Chubb acquisition, I have sadly seen the company move away from a caring truly animal/owner-centric model to a for profit machine.
My premiums - the increases to which are communicated in email tiny (illegal?) 9pt/12px font - are listed below. Each of the past 5 years, my premiums have increased 30% consistently as my medium-sized dog has aged from 8-12 years:
2020: $70.12
2021: $91.15
2022: $118.49
2023: $154.03
2024: $200.23
I just received notice that shortly my rates are increasing for 2025 will increase to $607.58/month!
This represents over a 203% increase likely just when both my dog and I need them most (and after I have been paying hundreds each month).
And Healthy Paws response? It's not a relfection of my dog or any specific cliam, but veterinary costs in my state. They suggested I consider lowering coverage and/or increase my deductible. The lowest I can now get my monthly premium by increasing my deductible 900% (to $1000) is still over $330/month unless I want to drop coverage by 10% or 20%.
Healthy Paws should be ashamed and Rep. Josh Gottheimer specifically called them out for such practices last year. Sadly, I think we need our government to regulate this industry like we do healthcare or class actions to prevent such unscrupulous business practices.
Healthy Paws is a great company that cares for our pets. I have been with HP for 6 years for my 2 dogs.. They have helped me several times over the years. Filing a claim is easy. I download the vet's invoice along with the reports. They e-mail to let me know they are processing my claim. In a day or two, they e-mailed me it was completed and notified the reimbursement deposit into my account right away. I suggested direct deposit is best because my check was lost in the mail. HP send a replacement a week after I file the report. Healthy Paws is affordable. It's worth it to have a great company that gives great service and cares about your pet.
I also suggested that read and following the policy guideline careful. Keep tract of your babies health report to submit to HP. In that way helps HP to processing your claim faster.
All best to the Pet Parent 🐶❤️
