Excellent Experience During a Difficult Time

Our 5 year old dog, Matt, had an obstruction in his stomach which required surgery. He was hospitalized and was very weak and unable to eat. We spent almost a whole weekend at the hospital with him and he was released a few days later. I called Healthy Paws to let them know about our situation and spoke with Leslie who was extremely professional and compassionate. She said she would look out for our claim which was several thousands of dollars. The claim was processed efficiently within 10 days as mentioned. I'm pleased to say Matt is back to his energetic self and our family is thrilled to see him eating and playing again. The story doesn't end there - Tim from Healthy Paws checked in recently to see how Matt was doing. This company goes beyond what you would expect - to be contacted by the insurance company and not the hospital that performed the surgery to check on Matt's well-being is quite something. They are professional, compassionate and have great customer service that is courteous, clear, accessible and gives reliable information. I wish they would insure my three children! Miles

Not convinced...

I'm not convinced if it is worth it to have this insurance, or pet insurance in general. It does give me peace of mind knowing that if anything major happens to my cats, that I have insurance to help off-set the immediate costs, but with 4 young seemingly healthy cats I may be spending more having insurance in the long run. After all, $1200 a year is a lot to bet on, unless something bad happens. Insurance is basically a betting game anyway. By the time my four 2-year old cats are considered seniors (at 7 years old), I will have paid $7,200 in insurance- not even counting my deductibles and 10% of the vet bills. I had Trupanion before and switched to Healthy Paws for a few reasons. Firstly, the rates are lower. I am paying the same amount with HP for 4 cats as I was paying Trupanion for 3 cats. Also, I love the ease of filing claims using HP's app. It's very convenient and user friendly. I chose to have a $100 deductible and for HP to cover 90%. SOME THINGS TO THINK ABOUT BEFORE BUYING ARE: ***Each individual animal has it's own deductible (makes sense, but I didn't think about that- 4 cats equals $400 in deductibles for me) ***The amount that goes toward the deductible is HP's 90% amount, NOT the 100% out of pocket amount. So, you end up being responsible for MORE than the deductible amount. Technically you pay about 110% of the deductible before HP even pays anything. For example, I assumed that if I paid $100 at the vet, that the deductible was met and HP would cover 90% of the rest of the eligible fees. HP would only count $90 towards the deductible, leaving me responsible for the remaining $10 next time. However, I would actually pay $11.12 at the vet and then my deductible would be met. So, really the deductible is $111.12. Not a big deal if you have a low deductible, but if you had a $500 deductible you would be responsible for $556 out of pocket or $1000 deductible would be $1112 out of pocket. ***If your veterinarian sucks at writing medical notes, you're out of luck. Make sure that your vet knows that you have insurance and that they need to write good notes to indicate why everything was done. Otherwise, everything that doesn't have notes is considered "preventative care"...why and IV catheter and sedation would be considered "preventative care", I don't know. Just have your bases covered. With that being said, I think if I had just one cat, I might find the insurance more worth it. Do your research, crunch numbers and see i

An incredibly efficient and honest insurance company. I only wish my own health insurance was this transparent and expedient.

Great people, great insurance

My rescue mutt suffers from severe hip dysplasia and a rare autoimmune disorder called lupoid onychodystrophy. One of his hips was so bad that our specialist sent us to a surgeon several hours away to have a new hip implanted. The surgery and implant cost upwards of $6000, not to mention all the vet work Buddy had in preparation. In short, that surgery transformed his life. I could never have made it happen without Healthy Paws. They continue to cover the acupuncture he receives (that, by the way, along with fish oil and vitamin e therapy) keeps his arthritis and autoimmune disorder under control. Their service is fast and friendly, and I feel good knowing that they are also committed to helping animals in need.
