Most people probably consider pet insurance to be a luxury item. But honestly, HealthyPaws has been an absolute lifesaver, and we will never be without insurance again! Insurance for both our dogs paid for itself in the first year. And honestly, the monthly premium is so worth having the peace of mind to know that if either of our fur babies get seriously sick or hurt, we don't need to choose between paying our mortgage and paying for their medical care.
We've had HealthyPaws insurance for a few years now. After our lhasa got attacked by another dog, resulting in a $600 vet bill, and then had to have eye surgery, costing well over $1k, we figured that insurance was the way to go. And boy, were we right! When our poor guy hurt his back, HealthyPaws reimbursed us for medication, x-rays, and everything else that we needed to make sure he got back into good health. He's about nine years old now and still acts like a puppy! When we adopted our second dog a few months ago, we immediately signed her up for HealthyPaws. Unfortunately, she recently developed a fast-growing tumor on her eye, we were able to get her the surgery to remove it without having to worry about how we were going to afford the procedure and medication.
On the customer service side, HealthyPaws is an amazing company. Quite simply, they do exactly what they advertise: they cover all illnesses and injuries as long as they're not pre-existing at the time you sign up. There's no hassle, no weird caveats, or fine print to trip you up. They just follow the formula, and you get reimbursed. It's THAT easy. The first claim can be a minor hassle, since you have to get all your dog's paperwork from the vet, but after that, submitting claims is an absolute breeze. (And if you get insurance right when you adopt your dog, it's a lot easier, because you can just submit all the paperwork from the shelter.)
Both the HealthyPaws app and the website are ridiculously easy to use. You upload copies of your itemized vet bills, and usually within a day or two, you get your explanation of benefits, and the reimbursement check comes a few days later. The whole process takes less than a week. I think you can also use paper forms, but we've always used the electronic claim process, and it is so fast and easy I don't know why you'd ever do anything else.
What I really love about HealthyPaws is that every single person I've ever dealt with has been helpful, knowledgeable, and downright pleasant to deal with, e

Guinness Root Canal
Healthy Paws is fantastic. Our 1 year old Lab had to get a root canal to save the tooth. The whole 2100 dollar procedure was covered.

excellent service from an insurance company
My first experience with Healthy Paws came last week. My lil guy become sick and needed an overnight at the hospital. The bill was in excess of $1000. HP responded quickly and sent a check within a week for 90% minus the basic office visit and the annual deductible. I coudn't be happier with the service.

Can you really put a price on your dog?
It's impossible for me to explain how much I recommend anyone with a dog or cat to have a Healthy Paws insurance plan on their pet. I was told by friends when I first signed up that it was a scam and I might as well save the money. My premium was about $30/month and they said I'd be better off just saving the money. A year into owning our rescue dog, Cody, he became lethargic and didn't want to eat. He started struggling to breath. As diagnosis after diagnosis was ruled out, the bills started rolling in. Healthy Paws never missed a beat, sending us the checks for their portion within days after receiving each claim. We are still trying to figure out what is wrong with Cody, but have spent thousands on tests, medications, and doctor visits. Healthy Paws has already paid us back thousands. They have never once nitpicked a charge or line item beyond what they say they don't cover. Without Healthy Paws, we never could have gotten this far in helping Cody. I will continue to get Healthy Paws for every pet I ever get.

Why can't human insurance be this good?
I pay $23 a month for my cat Athena's insurance. About a year after I signed up, she developed an ear infection. Weeks of various medications were doing nothing. Fluid sat at the bottom of her ear and kept coming back even with draining. Her ear drums were ripped from the infection and she developed a high fever, leaving her so lethargic I wondered if she would make it. The vet, whom I trust, recommended a specialist come in and perform a complex, expensive operation that would essentially take out part of her ear. The operation was about $2500. I felt more secure knowing I had HP, however, experiences with human insurance companies, who love to deny claims, had left me wary. So imagine my surprise when they paid out promptly. Not only that, they initially only paid half because I had paid a half-upfront downpayment. Since that wasn't itemized on the invoice, it wasn't paid. I called and explained the situation. At first they asked me to send a re-itemized bill and I said I would. But the next day, they just went ahead and processed it with no more fuss. Also, the customer service reps are helpful and polite. I'm glad to say Athena is feeling much better.
