Why is it so expensive?

I've had AKC and ASPCA pet insurances for both of my dogs. What I find absolutely amazing is that I pay less for the insurance for my horse than for either of my dogs and my horse has both mortality insurance and health insurance. Something is very wrong with this picture. I've already sent in a negative review on my ASPCA insurance (the current policy for both dogs). I was just throwing this question out there for general info/response.

Peace of Mind

Having had a number of dogs in the past, I knew how quickly vet bills can add up. So when we got our new baby English Bull Dog - Higgins, I signed up for insurance right away. The level insurance we chose helped cover some routine items right away. Higgins has had a few issues, lyme disease, ear infections and recently bee stings to his face : ( Our claims were always processed in a timely fashion. I would certainly recommend anyone with a pet to look into pet insurance. It helps when the additional costs are incurred unexpectedly.

Peace of Mind

As the pet parent to two dogs and two cats, I have had my share of veterinary expenses. All my animals are rescues so they didn't come with any health guarantees. I easily spend several thousand dollars a year at the vets. Their healthcare is not something I would ever consider scrimping on, so I researched pet health insurance. Just like people insurance, most pet policies have deductibles and clauses regarding pre-existing conditions and reasonable and customary charges. You need to do your homework. I have the premiums charged to my credit card monthly and consider it like a forced savings for veterinary expenses. I chose the ASPCA carrier since a portion of each premium goes to help homeless animals. The claims submissions is relatively easy and the processing is quite timely. Financially, I would be satisfied if I could recoup the cost of the premiums with the claims I submit. Fortunately, my pets are fairly young and in good health, so this hasn't happened yet. I consider the premiums as the cost of future peace of mind. Just like us, the older they get, the more medical intervention our pets require. Overall, I am very satisfied with the ASPCA pet health insurance and would recommend it to someone who wants to insure his/her pet(s).
