Great for young dogs too
I insured my 6-month-old Chihuahua/terrier mix right from the start, even though she is a healthy, young pup. Perhaps I had learned my lesson from a previous pet who fell ill when I was unemployed. I felt so helpless and went into debt because as a pet parent, I tried to do all that I can for my then Shih Tzu, who later died after being hospitalized for a week.
Needless to say, I never want to be in that place again. I weeped every time I went into the animal hospital to pay for the remaining bill, which my vet was nice enough to offer me an installment plan.
This is my first pet with insurance, and I'm learning the benefits as we go. We're less than one year into the policy, and I've filed about 5 claims from booster shots, annual checkup to upset stomach and surgery to get spayed.
Sure, not everything is covered under my plan and some misc. items such as waste disposal fee and some blood tests are not covered. But having said that, it has more than paid for itself for a peace of mind that is priceless. I met my deductible 6 months into the plan, and I'm a firm believer now and I plan on renewing pet insurance next year. I wanted to write this so it may help someone in need too.
