Pros and Cons

We live in the Washington DC area where pet care is quite expensive. As such, most of the charges are above the allowable amounts allowed by ASPCA. Our reimbusement is usually around 50% of the claim. We have a dog with glaucoma and recently she suffered from keratitis and needed surgery. Our ophthalmologist strongly stated that the two conditions are unrelated. I have submitted claims which have not yet been processed, so I don't know what the result will be. We bought insurance when our dog was approximately 12 years old and have not used it much. Only two claims have been processed in two years. I feel some comfort in having pet insurance, but until recently have not needed to use it. It is difficult for me to rate ASPCA since my experience has been limited. I actually am glad that it has been limited. One thing I have been disappointed in is the processing time. Telephone assistance is always very good.

So Happy We Have This

We got petshealth insurance when we got our dog (now 8 yrs old) on a cousin's recommendation and are very happy we did. We did the $100 deductible, 80% of allowable cost plan and it has always been useful to us, since Mr. Big likes to get lots of silly little injuries. We don't have to make money a factor when deciding whether or not to take him to the vet for something that is clearly bothering him - if he needs treatment, he gets to go. Reimbursement has always been prompt and fair (although as I live in a major city, my vets usually exceed whatever Petshealth deems 'allowable' costs). I did discover once they have a policy that says coverage will be denied on issues that carry over after the policy term renews every year, which was not awesome, but that is changing now (and I think it varies from state to state, perhaps) and now they have continuous coverage. When we got our cat, we immediately got insurance for him, too. He doesn't have nearly as many little health foibles as the dog, so we use the insurance far less for him, but it's really good and comforting to know it's there. I always recommend health insurance for friends with new pets.

Quite good

I have never had pet insurance so hard for me to say on a relative basis but I did end up getting reimbursed for some issues my pug had that I did not think I would be...so that was a nice surprise. Customer support people are nice and claims are easy to fill out and submit.

Very Good Pet Insurance

We've had one or more policies for over 5 years. We've been very happy with their Customer Service and turnaround time for claim processing.
