Like these plans

I have three cats who are covered under this insurance, and I am thinking of adding my dog as well. The level of customer service that ASPCA Pethealth provides is great. The time to reimbursement has slowed down within the last year, but it is still relatively prompt. I do wish that they had coverage for pre-existing conditions, as I have a chronically ill cat who requires quarterly blood work, etc. in order to manage his disease. I will return again and review once I have read over their new policy coverages and limits.

I was glad I had the coverage!

After going on vacation and leaving my dog Maggie with a neighbor, I came home to a sick dog. She had diahhrea and was very lathargic. We took her to the vet and she x-rays and an ultra. She also needed to stay overnight at the vet to be on intravenous. As you can imagine, the bill was huge. Luckily, my dog was diagnosed and cured. She had pancreatitis. At least it paid for a good potion of the bill.

Could do a tad better regarding reimbursements

I would rate ASPCA higher if they reimbursed a greater percentage of the bill. I have two vets who charge at or below competitive standard rates in a tri-county area and ASPCA claimed that their charges were high in comparison to other vets. Therefore, I did not get a full reimbursement. My past pet insurance company never questioned the bill and paid 100% - but, my premium was substantially higher. And, I have encouraged ASPCA to consider chiropractic adjustments as it has been proven this treatment is a viable precursor to invasive and expensive surgery. I do have concerns after reading other reviews about pre-existing conditions. With that said, I have found that ASPCA has excellent customer service, they are open to suggestions and take the time to answer my questions. I will do a comparative study of other pet insurance companies when I am up for renewal (as I always do, regardless of insurance companies) and if some of these issues are addressed, I will stay with ASPCA.

ASPCA Pet Insurance is a good idea for dogs

Originally our vet recommended it for our puppy several years ago. The first few years there I wondered why I was paying for it but now as she's getting older I realize its worth every penny. Niki had a infected gland a few months ago then an impacted tooth last month. We have the 80% plan and its more than paid for itself. Its really easy to file a claim then it takes about a month before they send the check. I wish my own health insurance was this easy.

good coverage, slow response time

I have used ASPCA insurance for 2-3 years now. It has been great in an emergency when I needed pet care that would otherwise be expensive. I generally end up recovering about 60% of the total cost, but the response/payment time can be very slow -- sometimes taking 4-6 weeks. It used to be much faster as a week or 2 at the most.

Monthly Cost

Rates start at: $10 (for accident only), $16 (Complete Coverage). Rates vary based on species, age, breed, and location.

Coverage

The pay-out amount is based on the actual vet bill, at a rate pre-selected by the customer: 90%, 80% or 70%

Payout Limits

Annual limits can be set by the customer, ranging from $2,500 to $20,000, including an unlimited option. No lifetime limits.

Deductible

$100, $250 or $500 annually.

Age Limits

No upper age limits. Pets must be at least 8 weeks old to enroll.

Waiting Period

There are no waiting periods for preventive care. Coverage begins 14 days after date listed on policy for accidents, illnesses, and knee/ligament conditions.

Exclusions

Pre-existing conditions, cosmetic procedures and breeding costs are not covered. ASPCA Pet Health Insurance has two Preventive Care plans that can be added to help cover a pet’s wellness care, including annual exams, vaccinations, tests, dental cleanings and flea/heartworm preventive. Preventive Care plans reimburse up to a set amount for each listed treatment. If your pet exhibited symptoms of a knee and ligament condition at any time, prior to enrollment or during a waiting period, all ligament and knee conditions will be excluded. Ligament and Knee are conditions involving a ligament, patella, meniscus or soft tissue disorder of the knee. Accident-Only coverage available.
