Claim was handled perfectly.

My 70+ lb. labradoodle had terrible gastritis andthankfully was treated and fully recovered. I submitted the vet's bill and the covered portion was paid to me without further question.

Good service, a few issues

While I appreciate having the insurance for my dog - and I really do - I have some issues. One is the customer service: they're mostly good, but they're also a bit rude. The other, very key issue, I have is their definition of a pre-existing condition. By their definition a pre-existing condition is something that occurred in any billing year that is not this year. So, for example, our dog has epilepsy. Her first seizure was in 2010. She was officially diagnosed in 2011. Because her first seizure was in a previous billing cycle, the epilepsy counts as a pre-existing condition and they won't cover ANYTHING related to the epilepsy - and that includes the daily dose of phenobarbital she takes. I really like what they're doing, and I really hate their idea of what is pre-existing. That said, they're the best pet insurance out there.

Relieved to have insurance.

I bought this insurance for my daughter and her new puppy over two years ago. We were in a training class with three other families and their pups when one week we learned that "Daisy" wouldn't be back in our class because she had been hit by a car. She had a family who could afford to get her the surgery she needed on two broken legs. I knew that if such a catastrophe happened to our "Jameson,"my daughter, who had just graduated from college, could never afford hospital emergency care, so after some research, I bought ASPCA Pet Insurance for "Jameson." Two years into the coverage "Jameson" became very sick, vomiting blood and dehydrated due to the vomiting and diarrhea. Medications, x-rays, and IVs cost close to $500. We were very pleasantly surprised to find most of these costs covered and reimbursed. It was a huge relief to know we could quickly get the care "Jameson" needed without worrying about how we were going to afford it. Thanks, ASPCA Pet Insurance!

OK but slow in paying

ASPCA insurance staff are very helpful and caring. Unfortunately, it takes a very long time to process a claim (over a month).

Monthly Cost

Rates start at: $10 (for accident only), $16 (Complete Coverage). Rates vary based on species, age, breed, and location.

Coverage

The pay-out amount is based on the actual vet bill, at a rate pre-selected by the customer: 90%, 80% or 70%

Payout Limits

Annual limits can be set by the customer, ranging from $2,500 to $20,000, including an unlimited option. No lifetime limits.

Deductible

$100, $250 or $500 annually.

Age Limits

No upper age limits. Pets must be at least 8 weeks old to enroll.

Waiting Period

There are no waiting periods for preventive care. Coverage begins 14 days after date listed on policy for accidents, illnesses, and knee/ligament conditions.

Exclusions

Pre-existing conditions, cosmetic procedures and breeding costs are not covered. ASPCA Pet Health Insurance has two Preventive Care plans that can be added to help cover a pet’s wellness care, including annual exams, vaccinations, tests, dental cleanings and flea/heartworm preventive. Preventive Care plans reimburse up to a set amount for each listed treatment. If your pet exhibited symptoms of a knee and ligament condition at any time, prior to enrollment or during a waiting period, all ligament and knee conditions will be excluded. Ligament and Knee are conditions involving a ligament, patella, meniscus or soft tissue disorder of the knee. Accident-Only coverage available.
