AKC Insurance

This is my first time with having pet insurance. I am extremely pleased and very happy with customer service, their speedy responses to claims. Even my vet said "it's the best".

Bad- pre-existing conditions for every claim.

My dog had diarrhea when she was a 3 month old puppy, was put on meds and recovered. I decided to get the AKC pet insurance later on when she was 7months old. When she was 11 months old she tore up her plastic crate and ate some of it. I took her in because I was concerned about her and she started to not eat her food as well as she did in the past. I had multiple tests run to make sure none of the plastic peices were stuck in her digestive system. It ended up just being upset tummy due to the plastic and she recovered with just being on some Pepcid. When I submitted my claim, I received an EOB saying it was a pre-existing condition. I called to figure out what they were talking about because it was certainly not pre-existing, it was an acute occurrence- she ate her crate which gave her gastritis!!! The representative told me that because she had been seen for gastric problems in the past, that it was a pre-existing condition. Basically any problem that your dog has ever been seen for in the past (before getting the coverage) will not be covered in the future even if it is totally unrelated in the cause. She said I could go back to the vet and fill out forms to re-evaluate, but I just decided to cancel the coverage. I could tell by the way things were headed that everything would be pre-existing if they had EVER been seen for any past problem, even if it had been 6+ months since the dog had been to the vet, had fully recovered, and the new incident was totally unrelated. I would not recommend this insurance. Get a savings account and put money in it each month- you'll be FAR BETTER OFF. People don't have time to argue and fill out more forms and re-submit. It also took about a month for them to process the claim I submitted. It isn't worth the hassle!

Trial Plan is a Joke

I had the 60 day trail plan - which was a total joke. First they never sent the policy documents. They said they sent them, but I had to call and ask for them after 30 days had passed. During that time, I submitted a claim which was not covered on the trial plan, but, of course, would have been covered with their standard plan. I prefer to go with a company that doesn't use smoke and mirrors tactics to gain your trust. The icing on the cake was that it took them almost two months after I filed the claim to tell me that it wasn't covered. I guess they were hoping I'd sign up in the mean time. Glad I went with another insurer!!!

Changes in coverage more exclusions higher premium

My dog just turned 6. He has had this insurance since he was 6 months old. They just sent me the renewal forms and have renamed all the plans. The exclusions have increased and the premium has increased. Even user the current coverage they reimbursed me less than in previous years. In the past they have done well to process my claims and I thought they were doing a good job.
