How to Save Money at Ohio Valley Animal Care Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Amazing staff and service. Dr. Morgan is wonderful and so is her assistant Elizabeth. The front desk girls are equally nice. Prices are much better than other animal clinics in the area. So glad we've switched.

Very friendly staff. Made room to get my dog in to make sure he gets the help he needs. They explain everything thoroughly and have made sure I’m okay with everything they are needing to do. Dr treated him as he was her own which really makes you more comfortable. Also works very well with you when it comes to pricing. Wouldn’t want to take my dog anywhere else!

I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS VET!!! For some reason leaving a comment says you recommend this place which is probably why it has so many recommendations but PLEASE if you love your pet read my experiences with this place below. Scheduled an appointment with this vet because of the ratings and the fact every local vet was scheduling out over three months. Waited 2.5 months when Jamie the very harsh and rude scheduler called on the day of our visit to reschedule the appointment for for a month later saying the vet decided to go on vacation. Again when I expressed concern but Jamie was extremely rude and told me to go somewhere else. Knowing I couldn’t get in anywhere else sooner I reluctantly waited. The day before the appointment, which was yesterday, my dog while being rushed to an emergency vet in Pittsburgh died of bloat due to his stomach issues. My wife called the vet this morning to tell them our dog had died while waiting for 3.5 months for them to see him and again Jamie was very rude and promised to refund $55 they requested to set the appointment originally. Jamie agreed to refund the money but didn’t until I called to ask to speak to an office manager or the vet because she needed my credit card number to initiate the refund. That alone should raise red flags to anyone considering this vet office. She told me there was zero chance of speaking to the vet or anyone else and that it’s not their fault because they hadn’t seen the dog. When I told her he died because they never honored his appointment so the vet could go on vacation she again became confrontational and rude saying the vet never went on vacation at all but contacted Covid a week later so whoever told me that was a liar when in fact it was her. Throughout this entire ordeal Jamie is the only person I spoke with. If this vet is any good at all and had honored the original appointment I believe my dog would still be alive. His problems were common but required prescription medication. I very rarely leave reviews, good or bad, but I feel I owe it to my deceased Chow Chow named Mushu to tell others that love their pets as much as he was loved, ( and if you read this very long review up to this point I’m sure you do), that had I followed my instinct when Jamie was rude in the beginning and just waited a couple weeks longer for a different vet by beloved pet would still be alive. In the end all I have left is several calls to a rude, argumentative and angry female named Jamie that also tried to keep my appointment deposit, and a dead pet which I loved dearly.

Don’t waste your time. I had been a good customer for a long time took my dog there today because he was sick not normal and they wouldn’t see him. My new vet is New Horizon in Saint Clairsville. They care.
