How to Save Money at Kanawha Valley Veterinary Emergency Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This place was amazing tonight! We took our dog in because he got very sick very fast and unfortunately he had parvo. They were so nice and honest. They told us our options and unfortunately the best option for our pup was to be put down 😭 they made the process easy and comforting for all of us! Thank you

We took in our 4year old a chiweenie dog. She was experiencing severe bruising and swelling of her neck. Thankfully they were not busy when we got there and they took her straight back. The staff was so kind and compassionate toward her. They were so helpful to us to figure out what was going on. After some testing and thinking back to the past week or two, we suspected she had gotten into some rat poison we found in the walls of our home while remodeling our kitchen. It was a very good possibility after looking at her symptoms that she had ingested some just a week or two prior. They were so attentive and prompt in caring for her. Hopefully the medicine they prescribed works and she will be on the road to recovery. 10/10 recommend this place the night that we went which was 11/15

Cannot say enough good things! The staff, the care, and the transparency of the prices are just a few to mention. Our kiddo was very sick early one morning and was placed in the ICU. The medical staff worked very quickly to take care of our boy. He was never alone and we were kept updated by both the Vet and her team. *Louie Gibson says thank you!!* The estimate was easy to understand and did not feel like we were being taken advantage of -- but rather we had realistic expectations. Granted, our pup is 15 lbs but we've experienced much higher bills for services that provide MUCH less quality in care. From an ICU nurse and his family -- thank you guys for everything. You gave the care to our four-legged family the way I'd want my two-legged family cared for. ❤️

My animal passed away unfortunately.. but they handled it very promptly, compassionately.. they were amazing with my children. Even my special needs child. They allowed my children to say goodbye.. they were very reasonably priced, and charged me much less than what they originally said.. it was a very sad day yesterday but they handled the experience amazingly. I'm glad my friend recommended I go there.

I wish I could actually rate our visit, but we got turned away. I drove there from Man for my dog Dixie to get care after being in a dog fight. The receptionist told me they were not taking any more animals today unless they were previous patients of theirs. She said they had one vet who was in surgery. And that I could drive even further to Huntington or Fairmont. I already brought my dog in pain from 20 minutes past Man. I told her there was no way we could go even further. She said I could try again tomorrow. I told her no thanks. The pet owners in the waiting room even got a little upset that they wouldn't see Dixie because they said she was an emergency. One of the people waiting even asked the receptionist if Dixie could go in the place of her dog, and she was told no. I told them all thanks for trying to help and that I would try a regular local vet Monday and hope that her leg isn't too badly infected by then. I sat in my truck after that and cried for about 10 minutes before leaving the parking lot because I felt like I failed her. I added pics of her leg.
