How to Save Money at Hillside Veterinary Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I can not say enough wonderful things about Hillside! Dr. Trumler and Dr. Masters have been wonderful on a variety of canine health and wellness issues. The facility is clean, the staff is compassionate and caring with such positive attitudes and I trust that my 3 pack of cattle dogs are getting A+ care. Switching almost two years ago to Hillside was the best pet parent decision I made! Smoke, Rocket and Arrow give all 12 paws up!

I am so grateful for Hillside Veterinary Hospital. They were caring and knowledgeable about the problems that my cat was having and assured me that if he developed any more issues they would be able to see him. That was all I needed to hear. 6 weeks ago, I severed ties with a vet office that I had taken my pets to for over 20 years, because they weren’t able to see my cat when I needed them the most. I told them how concerned I was that he was going to develop an infection, because he had an abscess and it was draining. The options they gave me consisted of me calling 3 different emergency vet hospitals to see if they would take him, or I would have to wait 5 days for an appt. As an RN for 37 years, I know that abscesses typically need antibiotics, but they didn’t seem to understand that concept. So I found a walk-in type ER vet hospital and waited 7 1/2 hours for nothing, and my cat never saw a doctor, because they were triaging emergencies first. So, I took my cat home and watched him for 5 days as he slowly healed on his own. He didn’t eat and slept the whole time, I thought that he may not get through this. It was so upsetting. Now, because of Hillside I have absolute peace of mind that my cat will be cared for in the best possible way. Thank you for caring for our pets!

I am so glad I found Hillside and Dr. Masters! I had brought my three dogs in to the office for a dental cleaning under sedation. After Dr. Masters had looked over my dogs, he was honest and said they didn't need a sedated cleaning for at least a year! I don't think any other vet around where I live would've been so honest! It isn't about the money with this place, it is about the health of the animals. And even after my dogs decided they didn't know how to behave as soon as we walked into the office, all the staff were still so nice and supportive. I am so happy I found them, Thanks Hillside and all of the wonderful staff! Shannon Hicks and Bear, Nala, and Flash aka Flash-hole :)

I highly recommend!!! This was the 1st vet appointment for my dog. She lived in a shelter prior and does not like other dogs, so there was a lot of anxiety going in. Hillside staff is AMAZING! They had us wait in the car until someone brought us in through a different route to avoid other dogs. They were so friendly, patient and kind with my dog and myself. She had an annual check-up with updated vaccinations. She did have some difficulty with getting her nails trimmed (which I knew was possible) and not wanting to traumatize her during this 1st visit, they offered alternative options to try again. Dr. Lock is so professional and compassionate, making the experience even better! Thank you Hillside Veterinary Hospital for making this 1st appointment a success. I'm sooo glad we chose you for our dog's care!!!

Took my miniture poodle for her puppy shots. This being the my first puppy in 20+ years, I had lots of questions. Dr. Olcott and her assistant were so patient and kind. Answered all my questions and went over everything to ease me mind on raising my sweet Maggie. The ladies at the front showed love to us the minute we walked in. You have no idea how that makes me feel; knowing they love my girl too. The building inside and out is very clean and welcoming. Hillside is my forever care for my pets.
