How to Save Money at VCA Veterinary Emergency Service & Veterinary Specialty Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This might be long winded but the staff at VCA Middleton Wisconsin deserves more than 5 stars (Fi and Maggie at the front desk, Brie and Brooke Vet Techs and finally Dr Leiter and Dr Evenson, you all deserve a standing "O"). My wife and I have never felt the caring for our dog like all of you have given. With all that said Polo is healing from the emergency surgery and the jury is out on the growth biospy removal - prayers please... Polo is 12 years old going on 13, for a 13 year old dog he's in excellent shape. On Tuesday last week we woke up to a couple of blood droplets on the floor, we have always given Polo a MilkBone before bed so we thought that he might have caught his tongue or a shape edge of the MilkBone cut him - no more blood for days. Long story short he never let us see in his mouth, we feed him lunch while traveling and all hell broke loose - Polo looked like he came out of a war zone (white Samoyed and blood doesn't mix). Our Vet could get him in and would only biopsy the growth that we found (remove it in December), called UW Madison Vet Hospital (same sorry but earliest appointment Sept 30th). Call one VCA and they gave us the same song and dance as our vet and UW... Interesting part while I was calling all over my gut was telling me to call this VCA specifically. Fi (receptionist)to start the call off was excellent, then I was able to talk with Dr Leiter he was awesome and made me feel relaxed (very caring) when we arrived Brie the Vet Tech handled the situation extremely well and Dr Leiter checked us in and gave us all the possibilities on what it could be (some you want to hear and some you don't). Dr Evenson was the late night surgeon that performed the surgery, when she called near midnight she helped my wife and I to relax and sleep knowing that our little big man was ok. Next morning we picked Polo up and Maggie (receptionist) was excellent, then we saw Brooke (Vet Tech) to release him - she was good as well and was very thorough and nice... 10 Stars Team... Pray for a good biopsy report.

I really like the reception staff here, and I do believe the vets we saw do genuinely care about animals. However, I do think, this is more profit-focused, than care-based and whether that's because it's part of a bigger corporation, I'm not sure. I unknowingly adopted a very sick puppy (from a rescue) with parvo and brought him here for emergency care. There were several issues we experienced over our few visits; not properly wearing PPE (to protect other animals from parvo exposure), testing without consent, and a serious lack of communication and transparency. I addressed these issues with the manager, her response was condescending and dismissive. She was not able to grasp the facts of the situation, and honestly, our contact with her only resulted in more frustration over our whole experience with VCA. That said, my dog did survive parvo. Early intervention with VCA, and the care and compassion of a different local vet clinic (that was able to give him the monoclonal antibody), saved his life. I recommend, if you take your fur family here, ensure you are aware of diagnostics before they are performed, and that the staff is making designs WITH you, not FOR you. **prepare for inevitable pet illness/injury. Set aside money monthly or purchase an insurance plan. I had my puppy for 2 days and ended up spending nearly 3k the first week I had him. Insurance would not have helped us at the time, but we are now better prepared for other issues, should they arise.

My little buddy Oakley wasn't feeling very good. He's an Australian Shepard- so he's always hyper... all the time lol play, play, play... so when I started to notice his energy levels and appetite had changed I was concerned. I called his vet and unfortunately they weren't able to see him for another week. They recommended VCA in Middleton. I called every vet I could near me because honestly I wanted to avoid an emergency vet bill. The time came; we had to go in. I called VCA in Middleton and they got us right in. The staff is amazing!! The vet listened to me and quickly identified he had Lyme. She treated him immediately. & Even though my little punk is handsome and sweet- I knew he wasn't feeling good and that he would get an attitude pretty quick. He needed his muzzle. I searched and searched my house before we left home but I couldn't find it. I warned the staff of my concerns as soon as we got there and thankfully they had one available for us. I wish I could remember the vet and all the staffs names because I would like to thank every one of them that helped my little buddy and me!! He's feeling much better and he's back at the park playing. They even called a few days later to check in on us. Very nice and completely appreciated!!

We never heard of the VCA before August 23,2024 when our local vetranarian told us our baby was severely ill. We were crying and upset knowing our Jada needed help. We didn't know how sick though. We drove and hour and a half to the VCA in fear. Upon arrival the staff and medical professionals at the VCA treated us and our pet like we were part of their family. They calmed our fears and helped us find the best strategy to help Jada after she was diagnosed with cancer within the last 24 hours. All the staff as well as Dr. Shiu, Jada's Oncologist have been so kind to us and our wonderful pet. When we have any questions they are answered. When we are afraid that our angel is having difficulties the VCA staff are getting us the answers within minutes. Dr. Shiu meets with us after every treatment. He makes sure we understand how Jada is doing and what to watch for. We can never express how impressed with the care that our family member receives at the VCA Oncology. We are telling everyone we know if their pet gets sick get them to the VCA in Middleton, Wisconsin. Thank you so much.

Last night around 8:30, my dog, lunged toward and was hit by a truck. The driver stopped to make sure she was ok. We appreciated it, knowing if it were us who hit a dog, it would have been a devastating conversation to have. We immediately took her to the VCA Veterinary Emergency Service in Middleton and after several long hours of sitting in the waiting room, we were able to take our baby home around 12:45 am with two puncture wounds on her tongue, road rash under her chin, and many bruises. We are so thankful this was the conclusion of the event. She is walking with a limp, but she is eating and wagging her tail like normal ❤️ My girl is a tank! So many thanks to the VCA for taking her into their care while being very busy. We seriously appreciated your empathy and care so much. She is now happily resting on all of her mom’s fancy pillows ❤️
