How to Save Money at Oakwood Hills Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The staff here helped my old kitty cross the rainbow bridge today. The entire process from scheduling the appointment to checking out at the end was as pleasant as it could be. The euthanasia room is a private, comfortable atmosphere with low lighting that is reserved just for you and your pet. I was expecting to wait in a public waiting room then go into a bright, hospital type room but this was more like a living room where you can sit alone with your pet in comfort & privacy as you say goodbye. The staff was caring, understanding, and walked me through the whole process step by step. I really appreciated their empathy and compassion during that tough time and would recommend them to anyone looking for a place to say goodbye to their beloved pet. I chose cremation & will receive his ashes in an urn & ink paw prints in about 2 weeks. RIP Mr Flip- my good boy ❤️❤️🌈

I live in Wausau and none of the vets in our area were available to see my cat when she started having trouble eating. They kept telling me to “call back in the morning for any openings” or take her to the Paws Health Emergency Vet Hospital (DON’T go there… HOURS AND HOURS of stress on you and your fur baby!!) and by day 3 of calling around, trying to check for cancellations and now she wasn’t eating at all… I needed to do something right away! Anyway, I called Oakwood Hills Animal Hospital since my daughter brings her babies here. They were able to get me in, same day… no waiting! They didn’t put her in a box and “set her behind doors in queue” like PAWS does! The compassion and empathy the doctor and staff had were so refreshing! Unfortunately, my baby had an aggressive form of mouth cancer and I chose to not have her suffer. The staff took such good care of her and didn’t make me feel rushed as I said “Goodbye”to my precious MoiMoi. It was such a hard moment for me and they were truly sympathetic with everything. When I decide to get another fur baby, I will DEFINITELY drive the 2 hours to establish the care with this clinic!! I truly cannot show enough gratitude in every step of the process. Thank you so much for making our last moments together so tender.

It was my first visit with my puppy, so I guess time will tell long term, but my first visit was excellent. It felt like being in a hospital for dogs, the staff and vets were very nice and professional, and the vet answered questions I had regarding my puppy. I checked out quite a few vet prices around town and oakwood hills had the best price for getting dogs neutered. Very satisfied with my first visit. UPDATE 3/16/2023 Roshi got neutered today. The same price they quoted me for months ago was the price they charged me with today, was wondering if that would be the case (Not based on any negative experience, just curiosity). Anywho, another professional and pleasant visit. The staff were very respectful and pleasant. My pup was in good hands.

I came from out of town and have a diabetic cat. Called them and they helped me out with his needs. When I came into the clinic the front desk ladies were so nice and happy! They made me feel welcome. Definitely would take my animals here if needed. I felt very comfortable and trusted them! This place was great.
