How to Save Money at Happy Tails Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

A couple of weeks ago, I took one of my cats to Happy Tails Veterinary Clinic for the first time. His appointment was for an ‘acute’ issue rather than a yearly wellness check-up or exam. My regular veterinarian recently moved to Oregon, so I knew I would need to find a new, highly qualified vet team for my three cats. However, when one of my cats developed an urgent issue, he needed to be evaluated and treated by an experienced veterinarian. As a registered nurse (RN), my background in the human healthcare system gives me some insight into pet healthcare as well. I was hoping to avoid the vet ER, as ER visits often provide very generalized care. Most of my experiences at the ER (for myself) have resulted in little more than a referral to a specialist and no clear answers—basically, "it could be one of these 800,000 things." I'm sure many can relate to that experience. So, I was relieved when I was able to schedule my cat’s appointment at Happy Tails and avoid the ER altogether. I was particularly happy that I wasn’t required to add a wellness exam or any additional services, which some vet offices often push for—of course, for additional cost. The prices at Happy Tails were extremely reasonable, and I am very thankful for that. Dr. Elizabeth Nasal and her staff were kind and professional throughout the visit. No unnecessary services or tests were recommended. Dr. Nasal and I agreed to start with her initial treatment plan, and only if my cat didn’t improve would we consider further testing. I was grateful that we were on the same page. Before the appointment, I was anxious. With my background and personal research, I had concerns about my cat’s symptoms. The healthcare system, both for humans and pets, has changed drastically in recent years, and I now feel apprehensive whenever I have medical appointments for myself or my pets. I have been misdiagnosed several times, which has caused me a lot of stress, uncertainty, and large medical bills. As a result, any medical or vet appointment is now very stressful for me. I mentioned this to the staff when I booked the appointment and again when I arrived. They were understanding, reassuring, and respectful of how I was feeling, and I can’t express how much I appreciate their kindness and compassion. I was also concerned that my cat might not receive the appropriate treatment. However, after discussing my concerns with Dr. Nasal, she examined my cat and explained her findings clearly. Her treatment recommendations were based on both test results and the exam, and I was happy with the care my cat received. Again, Dr. Nasal and her staff were incredibly kind and compassionate, and I cannot thank them enough for that. I am so relieved to have found Happy Tails Vet Clinic, and I plan to bring all three of my cats there for future care. It's hard to find great veterinary care with compassionate and knowledgeable staff these days—it truly feels like finding a diamond in the rough. Thank you to Dr. Nasal and her team for their superb care, compassion, and respect. It's difficult enough to have a sick pet, so having a vet clinic that treats both pets and their owners with kindness is incredibly important, and I am so grateful to have found that at Happy Tails.

Astro loves coming here! They do such a good job with him and listen to all of our concerns, no matter how silly they might be. They definitely understand that he's not just our pet, he's part of our family.

The staff is absolutely amazing! They are always so friendly and kind when you enter and we’re wonderfully with the animals. They are hands-down one of the best in the city. All animals should leave the vet, smiling like this!
