How to Save Money at Cottage Lake Veterinary Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.
How Do You Choose the Right Pet Insurance Provider?

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I recently took my Corgi in deeply stressed because she was sick. Cottage Lake Vet took us in right away if I left her there. The vets themselves always answer the phone calls and questions I had. I love this vet. The cost is a little more.

All of the staff at CL are wonderful. I'm never rushed, and they are very thoughtful and thorough. They will often follow up after visits to make sure all is going well. I've also been able to get an appointment on short notice if needed. I highly recommend!

We have been going to cottage lake vet since they literally opened I am guessing about 30 years ago! Since this practice was sold a few years ago it has become increasingly evident they are all about profit and NOT about the best interest of the animals!! I am extremely dissapointed in the foul turn this place has taken! For an example they would not refill my dogs insulin perscription unless he came in for a wellness check.. he is 16 diabetic, mostly blind and deaf... he is not well... but okay! We brought him in and I kid you not they tried to sell us on a freaking tooth cleaning! For $2,500!! This dog wouldn't even survive being put under for the procedure! I call to ask about a quick vaccine and they want a full "check up" in order to do one shot.. it is like $175 for the check up. Shots are more even tho he is completley healthy. It is ridiculous... I have spent sooooo much money there over the years since we have always had special needs animals and now they are trying to nickle and dime... just want to say this was NOT an issue when the previous owners were in charge! If we needed a simple refill we didn't have to pay a ton for a needless visit! today however was when I finally said enough is enough!! I called and asked if they could donate even a few bandages for the animal burn victims of Maui since I work with one hand in hand and am sending out a big package of supplies... they literally said it was not in their budget to do anything for anyone... wow! Gross! Selfish and completley ridiculous! Anyone that has gone to cottage lake vet and paid their bills knows they are not hurting for any kind of income! Also every single other vet I have talked to has donated something... says a lot about their character...I removed all my animals from their care today and will be telling all my friends and clients I have reccomended over the years to do the same!

Was told one price over the phone and charged another. ...more ..with apologies. If you still go there make, sure you ask ( as its happening) if its extra and what the price is BEFORE they do any work .... Get your pet medications from Costco. Watch your $$$ UPDATE 9/6 /23 : I requested a refill for the prescription they had just given me for my dog's , Bailey's ear issues: 1) they never indicated (when they gave me the prescription) how many drops were to go in each ear ear...I had to call to find out. 2) the bottle they gave me had an insufficient quantity to complete the administration, I ran out in 5 days 3) the Off MGR( ? ) said I was administering it incorrectly..which I wasn't FINALLY Cottage Lake Veterinary Hospital would not refill my prescription because of my on line bad ( originally submitted Review, above) and, would no longer service Bailey citing a "lack of trust in their ( Cottage Lake ) care" and their office management. By the way .. at first didn't have a record of my request ...but finally found it ... Duhhh. I leave it to the readers to decide whether to use Cottage Lake Vet ..I WON'T

We had been going to another veterinarian practice for several years and the practice started to feel like a machine. It was to busy, to chaotic, to impersonal and to pricy. Our daughter referred us to Cottage Lake Veterinary Hospital. The atmosphere of the office is wonderful. The staff is genuine and very attentive. The veterinarians are knowledgeable and professional. You just know that you are in good and competent hands. You can feel it. This is a good practice. Give them a chance!!
