How to Save Money at Pet Dental Specialists

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My elderly chihuahua Pippa is a somewhat complex anesthetic candidate and her oral health is very important to me. Every doctor, technician, manager, assistant, and client care representative I interacted with was professional, knowledgeable, and empathetic. My pet recovered easily from her procedure (she’s had issues with anesthesia recovery in the past) and was back to her normal self almost immediately! They efficiently took care of her oral health issues and went above and beyond every step of the way. We are so fortunate to have this resource for our pets in the PNW! ps. Pippa very much enjoyed the treats - here is a picture of her trying to talk me into giving her more! 😁

Thank you to Dr. Sievers and every single staff member for taking such incredible care of our sweet boy throughout his procedure and recovery. You have changed ours and Jason’s lives for the better, and we truly cannot thank you enough!

If I could give 10 stars, I would! Dr. Stepaniuk and the entire team at Pet Dental Specialists provided top-notch care to our two-year-old golden retriever Hank, who fractured his lower canine. Our regular vet diagnosed it as a complicated fracture, meaning our only options were extraction or a root canal. We called specialists all across the state to try to get a second opinion and were lucky enough to get in with Pet Dental Specialists relatively quickly. We were thrilled when Dr. Stepaniuk told us he suspected it was actually a "near pulp"/uncomplicated fracture during our initial consult, meaning they may be able to seal the tooth without needing a root canal. He and the team patiently answered my many questions and thoroughly explained the process, benefits/risks and costs of each procedure option. We made a plan for how we would navigate the treatment decision once Hank was under anesthesia and they were able to do a full exam/x-rays to confirm the diagnosis. I left the consult feeling informed, heard, and confident that our boy would receive amazing care. It's also worth noting that every patient gets a dedicated, licensed technician whose only job is to monitor your dog while under anesthesia here, which gave me great peace of mind. Hank had his procedure yesterday, and Dr. Stepaniuk personally called with the good news when the x-rays and exam showed it was indeed an uncomplicated fracture, so he would be able to seal and save the tooth. What a relief!! While no one wants to deal with dental issues, I wouldn’t hesitate to drive 2+ hours to come back to Pet Dental Specialists. They are clearly experts in what they do and I highly recommend them to anyone in the Northwest!

I would like to first begin by saying my experience at the appointment it self was great (that is where the first two stars are coming from). The dentist was great, as was his staff. My dog was referred here for a cracked K-9 that had been previously bonded by another vet. During the appointment it was agreed upon that the vet would review my dogs X-rays from when the tooth had originally cracked and from when she had her dental cleaning, to see if there had been any change and if further work would need to be done. This happened on July 19th. I was told that I should be hearing back in a few business days once they acquired the other X-ray from her normal vet. There was a number of back and forth calls to get the X-rays sent and some technical issues between vets, BUT they received the X-rays on August 1st. When I call I am told that the vet will get back on whether anything further needs to be done with her tooth. It is now September 5th and I have heard nothing back (regardless having called them to follow up). This is incredibly disappointing. for $175 consultation fee I expect 5 star treatment. Unfortunately due to their lack of administrative/communication skills, I will not be trusting them with my fur child.

I am happy to recommend Pet Dental Specialists. Our dog Charlie has a tumor on his gums that was interfering with his bite. We had taken him to a vet that wasted our time and money. Dr. Alice Sievers is specially trained and experienced in removing such tumors. She had to remove his small front teeth and she was able to get the entire mass with some margin. It's only been a couple of months, but so far, no regrowth and Charlie is eating and enjoying life. We are very thankful and fortunate to have such a skilled doctor and facility in our area. The staff was also very positive and professional. If your dog has gum or tooth problems, don't waste your money and time with any standard vet, go to Pet Dental Specialists.
