How to Save Money at Toptails Vet

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Friendly, modern, and very welcoming. We had our American Pitbull terrier come in after having an upset stomach. They took great care of him, and he’s a little anxious sometimes, and they handled it so great. Would gladly come back, thank you Dr. Abhishek for the wonderful service to our family. Front desk Asher and Fawn were warm and welcoming receptionist. It’s nice to feel at home when you’re at the vet.

Update: River died today. I would say it is a direct result of TopTails delaying approving her insulin despite many phone calls to the clinic following up. She developed ketoacidosis , pancreatitis, and liver failure due to the delay in insulin and was put down humanely at another animal hospital who had her best interest at heart. I was given 20 dollars off for writing a PAWSitive review. They advertised this promotion at the front desk ask you walked in the vet office "leave a pawsitive review for 20 dollars off your visit" I would also like to say that when I booked the appointment it was required to put 89 dollars down for the examination fee and chose the clinic for the positive reviews. I was apprehensive at first just because I was concerned the reviews may be impacted by the promotion. After talking to the veterinarian I thought he had the best interest of animals at heart until I went through the entire prescription process in getting her insulin approved which did lead to a great deal of suffering from my cat. After ordering her prescription medications through Chewy I immediately called the receptionist to let her know they were pending approval I was told they would be approved by the next day. By Friday they were not approved so I called the office again which they then communicated he was out and not in to approve the medication so they would be approved on Monday. We are talking about a 15 year old diabetic cat that desperately needs insulin and due to no policies in place to get medications approved when a vet is absent my cat is laying in her cat bed on the bathroom floor lethargic. This could have been prevented with communication and policies in place regarding the matter. I called today to voice my frustrations and I was shocked by the excuses and lack of empathy from the employee I spoke to. This clinic may preach that they care about the quality of life of their patients but based on their actions I don't buy that. Here are the facts of my exam: -my cat was weighed and teeth were checked -she is a complete indoor 15 year old female cat - I took her in because of rapid weight loss over the summer -they weighed her -checked her teeth -recommended flea treatment (fully indoor cat) and tooth tartar water additive -recommended and gave a 1000-4000 dollar quote for teeth cleaning -ordered, a senior blood panel, gave her fluids (that's a lot of treatment that is not related to the weight loss keep in mind she was put down two weeks later) The blood work came back about a day and a half later and I was relieved to find that her thyroid and kidneys are fine but her blood glucose is elevated. I was a bit disappointed by the lack of urgency the doctor showed regarding communicating the results. All veterinarians I have gone to previously are able to get these results immediately or within 24 hours. This delay was unacceptable. They communicated the doctor was out sick and they were closed after the fact. It is disappointing that there are no procedures in place to get crucial lifesaving timely information to pet owners. The Wednesday closure was not communicated beforehand. I would have gone somewhere else if I knew the process of getting blood work would take this long. I submitted the urine test within 24 hours and the diabetes diagnosis was confirmed four days later on a Tuesday. To be fair, I submitted the urine test on a Friday. The veterinarian told me he would call me when he had orders ready. Several hours had passed so I showed up to the clinic. I still wonder how long it would have taken if I didn't show up myself. I was given the antibiotics they were started immediately and I purchased the insulin, syringes, and diabetic cat food off Chewy immediately. I also tried neighborhood pharmacies but they needed to ship in the medications which would take a week so one day shipping through Chewy would be the quickest option. I called the vet clinic to let them know they were in the system ready they were not approved for 4 days and again I was told the doctor was sick and could not approve them.
