How to Save Money at Best Friend's Veterinary Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Love Best Friends! Have used them since I moved to Whidbey in 2020 and they are amazing! They take really great care of their pups. Female rottie spay didn’t go as planned and Dr. Anderson took personal care for her to ensure she was comfortable and progressed well in her recovery! Male neuter also didn’t go as planned but Dr. Syring took great care of him when we brought him back in! They do really care for your pet! Only other vet I used since being here was the Navy vet and while the pricing for visits/emergencies was slightly lower, I stopped using them after a few visits due to inconsistencies in their scheduling and lack of availability but Best Friends has been my go to for years!

We bring our GSP here and we have had a great experience with the staff and vets. Sound advice and listened to my husband when he brought her in about what we were wanting and what their advice was about different things. Plus she enjoyed all the attention everyone gave her!

I have a cat that was very sick. And I don't have a hometown vet so I was in panic mood trying to find Anyone That could see her.. TODAY... at first they told me no sorry were booked for months. I guess I must have sounded distressed and desperate, ( which I was) because as I was saying thank I'll keep looking, the receptionist asked me what the symptoms were, she than put me on hold, to talk to the vet, but came back and said we can get you in today... I cried... I was so grateful! I can't tell you how thankful I was and am for the thoughtfulness , they showed knowing I was completely desperate and they made room for me and my kitty to come in!! They even kept apologizing for how long it took, when I was just so grateful they took us in at all!! I will always be grateful. And I will highly recommend this vet! Thank you from my whole heart!!

I moved here a few months ago and am so glad i found this vet. I brought my two cats here and they really do care and take pride in their job. My sweet Zoey is finally getting the care she deserves. My last vet couldn't seem to figure out how to handle over grooming. Now she's on the correct medication that is helping! Thank you!

Best Friends is the. best. Words would fail to describe how grateful I am for the compassion and care they demonstrated toward me and my dog, Sadie. They cared for my beloved pit bull Junior for nearly 10 years on and off as we have left and come back to the island between 2003-2022. We just came back again this past summer 2022 and I needed to take my pit mix Sadie in for an ear infection. I called 4 vets in the area but no one was taking new patients. The lady who answered from Best Friends was the only one who asked me if it was a serious medical conccern. I told her it was an ear infection (my dog has a history of ear infections). She offered to ask Dr. Syring if there was any way we could have Sadie seen in the next few days. I called later in the afternoon, and was able to get an appointmentthe next day. We went to see Dr. Syring for the ear infection and she noticed some enlarged lymph nodes on my dog, which she feared was lymphoma. After some testing, her diagnosis was correct. We are absolutely heartbroken and devastated. Dr. Syring then explained the next steps and what our options were. We decided to consult with an oncologist in Seattle and Dr. Syring has been working with them over the past week to expedite any tests before we go in for our fist visit. Dr. Syring and her vet techs (Meg is one name I remember) have called several times to ask how Sadie is doing and to keep me informed of test results, etc. Dr. Syring personally has communicated with me via email as I was out of town on a preplanned trip. I honestly feel like they cared for my dog like they would care for their own. (And this is just my recent experience with them, I didn't even detail the wonderful care they provided my dog Junior from many years ago. Dr. Syring actually remembered my boy, all these years later.) Many reviewers say they are expensive, but vet care is expensive. They are an AAHA practice as well. In all of the years I've been going to them, I feel like I was getting the very best care from the best people, it's worth every penny. I would recommend them to anyone and everyone! Thank you Dr. Syring and the team who have helped us over the past 2 weeks. I don't know what happens now, and this cancer journey will be hard but I feel like Sadie is in the best hands. I feel grateful for their compassion, experience, knowledge and professionalism. Thank you.
