How to Save Money at Pet Emergency Center - Skagit Valley

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My cat was recently poisoned by lily’s in our yard. His kidney’s were failing and he was rapidly declining. We took him to the Pet Emergency Center and they got him in immediately. They were so compassionate and skilled in what they do. I have no doubt my cat is alive because of their quick actions. Can’t speak more highly of them.

I am so beyond grateful for this hospital. I had an ongoing issue with my dog and couldn't get any emergency veterinary to see him. I live in Tacoma. The night I was looking, I called everywhere between Vancouver, Poulsbo, and Everett. No one would see him because he wasn't critical enough compared to others. Finally at 11pm my sister found this hospital and I drove two hours to get there. I waited about 5 hours, but this was the weekend before the holiday and everywhere else was max capacity or only taking critical. I would gladly wait double that to get him seen. I appreciate that they give you the option to wait instead of turning you awa From the moment I called to each person I interacted with, it was such a great experience. Everyone there really cared. Especially the woman who triaged us. I finally felt like someone was listening to me. The doctor was excellent! Prior to this, I had taken my dog to Urgent Care on 06/20 because he couldn't open his mouth. They suspected a dental abscess but couldn't look because he was in pain. They quoted me $3200 for a dental surgery and said they'd call me the same day. Long story short, that never happened despite me following up with them repeatedly. And they sent me home with only pain meds, not antibiotics. I wasn't convinced, though. The second the doctor walked in, she said, "I think it's an injury, not his teeth." She offered to sedate my dog and check his mouth (yes, please!) And guess what? He had an injury. A hole in his mouth with an abscess. My poor guy couldn't open his mouth for 13 days and the infection got worse because the previous clinic, and the hospital I waited at for 3 hours before this one, wouldn't give him antibiotics or sedate him to look in his mouth. My dog is now on the mend and happily resting at home. I had an accident prone beagle for 16 years, so trust me when I say I have been to a lot of veterinary emergency rooms. This was the best experience I have had. I'm so grateful that this clinic was kind, listened to my concerns, and actually helped my dog.

The vet here was kind and compassionate. She also explained things clearly and gave me options and the time to consider what we should do. When my dog had a crisis I was so impressed at how quickly the team responded. We did not get the outcome we hoped for with our doggo, but everyone we worked with was thorough, kind, and supportive. No other "24 hour emergency hospital" would see us on a Sunday night. Yes the wait was long, but unlike other places they at least offered us the option to come ASAP and a triage when we arrived instead of just waiting on some list until they could call us in. I hope I never need this type of emergency service again, but if I did I wouldn't hesitate to bring my pet here.

Great care, treatment, explanation and empathy of my visit with my wire fox terrier Dexter. I live in Snohomish, the front desk explained process/wait time...techs were great...vet, Malkolm Graffe was superb in his communication, opinion and empathy. It was a huge help in determining what to do to take care of my best friend. Thanks to all at the center.

This morning, around 2:30 am, i called PEC with panic because of my cat becoming paralyzed in his hind legs. I told them I was on the way & the receptionist told me she would let the techs know so they could prepare. She told me to drive safe & made sure I was okay to drive. Once I arrived, a tech came out within 2 minutes & took him back. The doctor came in & gave me my condolences & prepared me to say goodbye to my best friend. He was so kind & it pained him too. The receptionist came in & gave me a hug because I was alone. I could not recommend this hospital more. If you’re looking for compassionate people who care about your animals, go to PEC. Love you Mata Boy 🤍
