How to Save Money at Mercer Island Veterinary Clinic
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

So, so, SO grateful for the Mercer Island Vet Clinic. My dog doesn’t have any serious medical issues and could realistically receive a sufficient level of care at the vet clinic that’s only a 3-minute drive from us, but I will still drive 30-45 minutes to bring him here. My dog is very fearful of new people and we have only had stressful visits at the past two clinics we’ve been to, even with me notifying the clinic that he’s fearful and providing specific instructions on how to greet him. Happy visits didn’t help—the clinics quickly became “poisoned” and his anxiety got worse every time we pulled into the parking lot. The team at the Mercer Island Clinic just gets it. You let them know you have a fearful dog (they have a survey and everything) and they know what to do from there. Their whole check-in process is designed so that your pet doesn’t encounter other people or animals, which seems like a no brainer if you have a reactive pet. The entire team is fear-free certified which helps ensure consistency from the start of your visit to the end. Dr. Roller specifically has been so great, patient, and respectful. The client services team (specifically Kassandra who always gets back to my annoying emails and questions so quickly!) is top-notch. Admittedly my dog probably doesn’t LOVE going here, but I am really optimistic that we’ll get to a point where he will tolerate it without a lot of fear, and I think that’s a great place to start.

I was referred to MIVC after feeling a bit defeated on my dog’s fearfulness and reactivity at the vet. After many failed attempts at simple routine care at his original vet, it was time to explore other options. I am now kicking myself for not knowing about fear free veterinary care sooner because my experience with MIVC has been literally AMAZING. I am 30 minutes away from the clinic (without traffic) but would drive hours if I needed to for this level of care! We started out with cooperative care visits with Monique which were so helpful in getting my dog comfortable being in a clinic environment and prepping for routine procedures. We have since been able to find a great medication protocol for Red prior to his visits, and he had a successful appointment which consisted of x-rays, mass removal and a dental. Monique knew all the tricks at setting us up for success for our appointment and beyond, and I am still shocked with how well my dog has been doing. He has since now been getting weekly laser therapy visits with zero stress and all tail wags (mind blown). The rest of the staff is also amazing, including Dr Crocker who did a great job with him for his dental and being super informative and thorough any time we talked whether it was on the phone or once I arrived to pick up my dog. Every time we have walked through the doors, my dog is excited to see the staff (I never thought this would be possible). Overall I would recommend MIVC to any dog owner, especially one who has a dog that isn’t a fan of the vet. Picture: My dog soliciting pets from a staff member

Exceptional care! My cat had a chipped canine and they were able to do a root canal to save the tooth and improve her lifelong quality of life. Despite the delicacy of the procedure (my cat is just 7 pounds, and the tooth in question is tiny) everything went well and a year later the tooth is looking good and my cat is happy and healthy.

We have been taking our dogs and cat to MIVC for at least 6 years now and have always had a positive experience. We love how the vets make every effort to help our pets comfortable and less anxious when they arrive. The front-desk team is incredibly responsible and helpful on email for scheduling, refilling prescriptions, and getting answers to questions on the fly. We moved away from Mercer Island years ago but still commute in to take our animals here - 5/5, highly recommend!

Dr. Crocker and his team saved my dog Tiko's life! The Mercer Island Vet team is the best of the best. We won't be taking him anywhere else since we started coming here for his care. Sending tremendous thanks to Chanel for making sure the process from start to finish was a breeze! Everything from planning Tiko's consultation exam to the last days before surgery... Thank you for being considerate and accommodating, making us feel important and cared for during such delicate times! Our boy is healing from major dental surgery, a total game-changer for health and his spirit! We love you all and can't thank you enough for everything you've done ❤
