How to Save Money at Puget Sound Veterinary Specialty & Emergency
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
The doctors and the staff are knowledgeable and helpful. The facility is clean and the waiting area is very comfortable (free coffee available). It was nice being able to fill out all the paperwork online ahead of time and get checked in virtually without having to wait there at the facility. The ability to see where I was in the queue whenever I wanted to was also helpful. They were having an especially busy day when I was there and one of the text messages estimated the wait time to be 6 to 8 hours. One of my few complaints is that this was never updated to reflect real-time status of events. At one point there were zero people in front of us in the queue. I thought it might be close to our time, but I never got a text message until several hours later that they were finally ready to see me. We didn't get the message that it was okay for us to come to the facility until about 9 hours after our initial check-in. Also, the front desk staff was asking me to fill out an additional form that was repetitive of the information I already filled out online. They started asking me a few questions about my visit, which again had already been filled out online. I was told they are working on removing these redundancies. Overall, I was pleased with the visit and the level of service our pet received, and the frequent text messages while our pet was being seen and my frequent in person updates by the staff for a very helpful and supportive.

Dr. Boyd and her team are outstanding. My dog has eye issues and even had to have one of her eyes removed which was scary for both me and my dog. I wouldn't have wanted any other doctor to perform the surgery as I 100% trust Dr. Boyd. PSVS have always treated my dog with such care and kindness. They even custom decorated her cone! I know my sweet pup is in good hands.

Very disappointed, upset and frustrated. I registered and was put on a waiting list around noon. My dog is experiencing black diarrhea. I expressed my concern that it is a sign of internal bleeding. Eleven hours later, and attempts to get in at every other veterinary ER, I was told there was a 6-8 hour wait and then later another 6-8 hour wait due to “abnormally high patient volume”. Unfortunately, a 6-8 hour wait seems to be the norm. In June, I brought one of my other dogs and was told it would be a 6-8 hour wait. I did not think her condition would allow that long of a wait and Puget Sound did not consider her critical. We found another ER that took her right away. She was put on oxygen and placed in ICU. Unfortunately, we lost her. If veterinary hospitals cannot accommodate the volume of patients, then they should consider hiring more doctors. Knowing the cost of treating our fur babies and the importance it carries, the hospitals can surely afford to expand their resources.

I cannot express how grateful I am to PSVS and Doctor Bal. I brought in my cat, Tsarmina, a few weeks ago with an emergency, and had to make the most difficult decision of my life. The doctor explained everything to me clearly and with great empathy, and she and the staff helped me through the process with so much patience and kindness. I know my sweet girl's last moments were the best they could be. I am so thankful for PSVS's care and would recommend them to anyone.

I wanted to thank Puget Sound Vet for their compassion and speediness. While out of town, my son called and said that our 6 yr old kitty was ill. I called the vet and they recommended taking him to Puget Sound. I called my son back at 8:05 am and told him where to go. By 8:30 am he called me back in tears with a diagnosis and sad news that our sweet boy needed to be euthanized. I felt awful that my son had to deal with this while I was away. This kitty was precious to our family and my son was obviously emotional through the whole process. Puget Sound went above and beyond to take care of not just our kitty, but also my son and myself. Thank you so very much!
