How to Save Money at Malletts Bay Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The staff and caring and understanding of my pets special needs. I have brought all my animals here for the past 10 years. I would and constantly recommend them to my friends. I'm so pleased with their service and prices.

Veronica at the front desk is incredibly apathetic. The last phone call I had with her I was nearly in tears over my boy and she was dismissive, only caring about taking my payment. I’ve been coming here for nearly 2 years, the doctors are great, Dr. Gazo being an absolute sweetheart. But the techs make me uneasy, as I’ve been sent home with incorrect doses of medicine and have been talked to like I’m just a debit card. I think I’ll be letting go of this hospital, as it’s no longer the only one with exotic doctors, and BEVS has very empathetic and trustworthy people running the show.

It can be a little tough to get your first appointment but that seems to just be the way it is everywhere these days. The staff here is lovely and attentive. The vet listened to all my questions and patiently answered them. Very clean place. Never felt pushed to do anything extra and even told me to wait on getting next round of heart guard so I didn't get waste money getting it before I needed it. My last vet couldn't wait to push it on me and had a list of expensive surgeries they said needed to be done or my poor pooch wouldn't love longer than 3 months. Didn't get that here. Moving a few towns over soon but I will make the drive to keep going here.

Loved Mallets Bay till my kitty got sick. Completely missed her cancer (assured me she wasnt at risk of that) she is now terminal (diagnosed out of state) and we are very sad. Wish they did not have a practice of calling people to argue with commentary when it is free speech. I thought they had patients to help. Samantha is very sweet and Dr. Wolfheiter was kind but did not follow up to call but was apparently sad and sent Dr. Page to do it :) Edit: Wow I am shocked by how much time the main doctor put into responding to this and arguing with me and not apologizing or offering any condolences. LOL I care for my cat very well and have fought for her. I was told at mallets bay by the vet at the initial recheck that it was NOT cancer. And that there was no suspicion of it with age. Its unfortunate that she mispoke and you are covering it up 🤷🏾‍♀️

I have been going here for a little over 3 years now with my two dogs. 1 huskey and 1 catahoula mix. Not only have they they been kind and patient, they provide options and information. After an unfortunate incident I fell in love with them even more. We worked with Dr.Naylor and she was amazing. We had alot of concerns about 1 of the pups and she gave us information and options for different ways to treat him. After what we just went through with another facility it's a breath of fresh air to have truly good and kind people to work with. There is a reason they have good reviews.
