How to Save Money at Barton Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Wonderful caring people. Stan and Judy are the best. My family has been using them for years. My dogs (past and present) actually love coming here for their annual visit.

We have been using Barton Vet for years for are pets. Recently we were told by the Stan that he no longer cared if we were clients or not...Several years ago we had a dog that was injured and it was before office hours..When the phone was answered I explained what happened and his first words were " Well you know this is going to be considered emergency and will cost several hundred dollars for the visit." (No impathy at all) The dog was kept at the vets overnight and the next morning we went to visit. Judy said there were no signs of life and she was unresponsive.....When we walked in Nilly opened her eyes and she knew we were there.....No she couldnt move because she was so heavily medicated!! The vet said the best thing would be to put her down....So we did what was suggested....After we realized the hospital never ever even gave an xray to show problems!! It haunts me to this very day that we didnt give Nilly a chance to come out of her over medicated state.....Do not bring a sick pet here!! They are ok for routine shots but that is all I would ever trust them again if I had an injured pet.

They are always caring and willing to help make our dogs feel comfortable in their care. I love the way they have set up to take proper COVID19 precautions, providing outdoor space for us to interact during the dogs examination. Dr. Judy, Stan, and all the staff are lovely, and provide very good, honest care for our furry family members.

My husband (a Vermonter) and I live in AZ. We are spending the summer in Barton. We enjoy having our nephew Chihuahua stay with us for extended periods. The morning of May 14th all was good. Early afternoon all changed. Sarge, our nephew, wouldn’t eat, wouldn’t settle and was walking with his tail between his legs. He would sit and stare at the floor. His eyes were “rheumy.” I didn’t know what to do for him. I spoke with a friend in AZ that had treated many dogs. She felt Sarge was in pain and needed medical assistance. I looked online, looked at the reviews and decided to call the Barton Veterinary Hospital. I spoke with a very nice gentleman named Stan. I explained Sarge’s symptoms and the fact he is a senior citizen. I was very relieved when Stan said to bring our boy in that afternoon. Covid precautions were being observed so I could not go in. That was okay. My main concern was that Sarge get help. My sister-in-law, Sarge’s mother, arrived after making the trip from Burlington. We were instructed to remain under the canopy. The exam room has a large window that faces the area covered by the canopy. We were able to see Sarge and Sarge could see us. Dr Robitaille-Dunklee examed Sarge, drew blood work and expressed his anal glands. The CBC returned normal. It was as if someone had flipped a switch on Sarge. His tail came up and he was the active, happy dog we knew and loved. Dr. Robitaille-Dunklee, Stan and the assistant (sorry I didn’t get her name), were all kind, compassionate and professional. I greatly appreciated their willingness to see Sarge on short notice and the wonderful treatment he received. I was happily surprised at how reasonable the bill was. Not only did Sarge received the above treatment and lab but also was given a tube of Laxatone and pain medication to take at home. . In AZ I would be looking at a $400 to $500 charge. People that go above and beyond do not always get the recognition they deserve. I felt writing this review to be imperative. Great staff, great service. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
