How to Save Money at Peninsula Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

On Sun 8/27/23 we brought our dog in for shaking, lethargy, vomiting. She was evaluated by Dr. Hope Valentine. Based off of her recommendation an X-ray and a lab test for pancreatitis was completed. We were told that based off of the results further testing could be done but Dr. Valentine didn’t feel it was truly necessary. She told us her lab test was negative for pancreatitis and her X-ray showed “hard poops” and gas and that we needed to get her to poop and she would probably feel better. Tuesday morning she had a bowel movement but her symptoms had not improved and she was vomiting. Her primary vet could not see her and we were directed to bring her back to this clinic so we did. On Tues 8/29/23 our dog was evaluated by Dr. Jamie Coulson who said nothing on the xray two days prior was cause for concern and more lab work was completed. Based on a slightly high white blood cell count and a high liver enzyme she was diagnosed and treated for suspected chlangiohepatitis. We were told to ensure she ate and started the antibiotic. We did so but she continued to vomit and not improved. On Wed 8/30/23 we were again told her primary vet couldn’t see her and told to take her back for the third time in 4 days so we did. This time she was seen by Dr. Vanessa Selger who recommended she be hospitalized, have repeat labs, and an ultrasound done so this was done. I received a call from Dr. Selger who told me my dog needed to be transferred to Richmond, Va for a more in depth ultrasound as the one there showed a possible obstruction in the ureter and stones in her kidney as well as concern that her kidney would rupture. I was given an estimate for the initial treatment in Richmond and asked if I wanted to proceed with treatment. Dr. Selger did not even come and speak with us at the time of our dog’s discharge when we picked her up which I find to be very cowardly. We did proceed with treatment. Our dog had her entire kidney and urter removed. The clinic they transferred us to contacted them today 9/12/23 to see if they would refill the antibiotic she’s been on (PARC did a urine culture that confirmed this medication is effective) so we would not have to drive over an hr to get in. This clinic saw her 3 times (which cost over $2600), sent her to this Richmond clinic, the clinic called to ensure they had any/all info needed to write this rx, and had labs to confirm the need for this medication and refused to refill it for us. I am honestly disgusted with the “doctors” at this clinic. The continued lack of compassion for us and our animal was and is astounding. Find anywhere else to take your animal for care.

Obviously since this is an emergency vet clinic so take your pet if you have no other option but be mindful of the negative reviews. My experience was similar to others as well. We took my cat in on a holiday so we had to pay "holiday pay," the holiday was labor day... either way, we were told he needed a catheter due to him being blocked and unable to pee, he was peeing though, it was bloody but he was peeing so after asking questions they stated it was a partial block. Our other option was to put him down.... We opted for the catheter but when they went to place it they felt resistance so they took an xray and found stones in his urethra and bladder. We were informed after the xray but prior to getting a catheter in about the stones. She told us we could try and manage it with diet and follow up with our primary vet. We may possibly need surgery later down the road. This was before the catheter was put in but they put it in after telling us. He stayed overnight at another facility and when we took him back the next morning there was a different vet. This vet wasn't happy that we did a catheter, stated it could have damaged his urethra with the stones and how inflamed he was and that he should have had the surgery and if we don't do it we will be right back here soon. So now we've put out 1600 just to be told we need to do something that should have been done prior... or we could put him down. We've already put out that much, I'm not going home without my cat at this point so we opt for the surgery even though it doubles what we have already spent. At this point I am frustrated given the fact that they knew about the stones prior to the catheter and somehow it went from them telling us one thing to a completely different thing the next day, costing us now double. So I have the manager call me. I could tell from the initial conversation that they were going to "damage control" the situation and I'd hear back why we had to do both, and that's exactly how it went after she spoke to the two different vets. So, even though the second vet was upset about the decision the first vet made to cath him, it was now the "right course of action." So no, I do not recommend, unless you want to be told one thing, then another, then another, costing you over double... Oh and I'd love to know what kind of surgical gloves cost $12 a piece 😂 just like most medical facilities, they take advantage of people's fears and pain. I wish I was able to take him to our regular vet but of course this had to happen on labor day. I left out some of the smaller complaints I have about this place (having us wait in the car then forget we were there, having us on the verge of putting my kitty down multiple times, etc) but it's not even worth my time and I just want to forget this place exists. I truly hope your experience is not like ours. But I'd recommend going elsewhere 💛

I can't recommend this place enough! Everyone that works here was so warm and caring. Our beloved cat passed away unexpectedly after 10 wonderful years. We came here to have her cremated and the staff really showed empathy towards us. We received her ashes in less than a week which was nice. Staff really shows heart and compassion for people and their pets.

Extremely professional and proficient office and care team. We were given a 2-3 hour wait time and overall were there for almost 5 hours - totally reasonable when understanding that these people deal with emergent cases walking through the door and have to triage accordingly. If you’re reading this, as a client, please understand that dog’s can’t verbally tell us what’s happening so diagnosis/treatment is going to take time and it won’t be a quick in and out appointment. Will absolutely be using them again for any future emergencies. Thank you!
