How to Save Money at Coastal Animal Referral Emergency (CARE)

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My dog sadly got attacked by one of her friends. After calling 10 emergency vets in Richmond, I was finally directed to this vet. They automatically told me to bring her in and they’d take her as soon as we got there. I remember running in with my boyfriend who was carrying her and the ladies behind the desk go “is this Daisy” and rushed her back. They got her on pain management, she was missing a whole chunk out of her front right leg and several other puncture wounds on her body. Within thirty minutes a vet came into our waiting room telling us their plan and we just told them to do whatever was needed. When we went to pick her up the following evening, I was so impressed with how they repaired her leg. They gave us such detailed instructions on care for the next few weeks. She has so many stitches and a drainage tube. But dang did they do an impeccable job! It’s only been three days since the surgery and I’m still so impressed. The point of this is, the staff is FANTASTIC and the vets can do a banging job with severe wound repair. Thank you all so much!

I have recently moved to the area and prior to this have visited a number of different animal urgent cares through the years. Those experiences ranged from Luke warm to absolutely horrible treatment of animal and owner that I wouldn't have believed if I wasn't the one living it. C.A.R.E absolutely blew all of them out of the water. The absolute BEST experience I have ever had. From the first phone call to (hopefully) our last contact their staff has gone above and beyond the level of care I would expect a busy office to give. They took time to make my young herding breed pup feel more comfortable and her first time away from me for medical help low stress for both of us. I know I can be a bit of an overly involved owner with many odd questions but not once did they make me feel like a burden. I hope I don't need their services again, but if I do, they will be the first urgent facility I run to every time. Side note to anyone who may still be reading. Get pet insurance before soemthing happens! They have my girl covered and it was so nice being able to use it. Thank you thank you thank you so very much to all their desk, tech, and vet staff. You are all appreciated so much more than you know. I also very much appreciate being given honest reports on how my young dog was handling the situation so we have things to work on desensitizing to make any future medical visits even more relaxed for her.

We recently had to say goodbye to our beloved senior black lab, Chelsea, and we can’t express enough gratitude for the exceptional care and support we received from the team at CARE. Throughout Chelsea’s final hours, the clinic was open, informative, and transparent about all available options. Their compassionate approach and clear communication made a difficult time a bit easier to navigate. The team’s professionalism and empathy were truly remarkable, and we felt fully supported in making the best decisions for Chelsea’s comfort. When it came time to say our final goodbyes, the process was anything but clinical. Chelsea’s last moments were spent in a cozy room with a comfortable rug, where we were all able to sit with her on the floor, showering her with love and goodbyes. CARE even allowed us to take her home to be buried next to her big brother. A week later, we received a thoughtful handwritten card from the clinic, a gesture I never expected but deeply appreciated. It was a touching reminder that, even in our darkest hours, CARE truly shared in our sorrow and supported our choices with genuine kindness. I highly recommend CARE for their outstanding care and heartfelt compassion. With all the crazy I do not remember the team names that was there and on staff on Sunday, July 28th. But we thank each and everyone one of you that touched and helped our good girl Chelsea.

I came here with my male Pitbull because his incision site opened up from a prior vets surgery for a mass tumor removal. Dr.Christopher Stevens was VERY kind and informative. The staff tech Kendall was also VERY kind. The facility is very upscale and clean. The Dr. did the surgery that same nightand had my boy ready to go home that next morning.Very pleased with the professionalism and kindness shown! Definitely recommend this practice vs. other Williamsburg practices!

I'm so grateful for the Veterinarians and Staff at Coastal Animal Referral Emergency Care. My furbaby, Mr. Timber Bear Sparks, experienced an emergency and we couldn't find any place in VA Beach that could take him. My husband and I we're referred to Coastal, and God Bless them, they saw Mr. T.B. Sparks and diagnosed his issue. They treated his pain and made sure he was comfy, and they were so great about explaining everything going on. I was a crying mess because he had to be admitted, but I knew he was with people who would love, comfort, and care for him as if he was their own. My doggo is my whole world, and words cannot express how grateful I am. I wish there was a way I could repay them for their kindness because a simple "Thank You" doesn't even touch on the appreciation I have for them.
