How to Save Money at Veterinary Emergency & Specialty of Tidewater
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I couldn't be more thankful to the incredible staff at this location. They have been open for two weeks and showed the empathy and grace of a longstanding team. My soul dog, Dusty, had multiple seizures and passed shortly after at this location. They absolutely loved him and cared for him as if he were their own. During his passing, they ensured everything was in order and explained things, many times, for as many times as I needed to hear them. It was one of the worst days of my life, but they led with their whole hearts in the process. I am forever thankful for them. It speaks volumes on how time doesn't reflect the rating of a place but, the compassion of the people do. After their care of my fur baby and watching this team help other families, I can say that, without a doubt, anyone's fur baby will receive the best care they could ask for. Thank you, VEST for being a guiding light on one of my darkest days. ❤️

We took our sweet Duke to Vest and were a little worried since we are very particular about the care for our fur babies and we were not familiar with them. From the minute we arrived everyone was so caring and professional. After lots of test and steps taken to keep our boy as stable as possible we had to make the difficult decision to let him go. Dr. Davis was amazing!!! She came in several times with updates and test results. Even though they were super busy she never made us feel rushed. She walked us through the entire process, a few times actually cause our heads were swirling. We were able to see him and say our goodbyes and stay with him the entire time. She even stayed in the room with us for a few minutes after he was gone just loving on him and making sure we were ok. For such a terrible experience we could not have asked for a better staff. RIP our sweet boy. Thank you Dr.Davis and staff!!!!

My dog Layla had a sudden emergency in the evening and VEST was my only option to give her any care. Unfortunately, there was nothing that could be done to save her. I'm torn to shreds because my girl is gone but every employee that was there that night was so kind and helpful. I want you all to know you're rockstars and I appreciate everything that you did for Layla and myself. Thank you all so much for your hard work and compassion.

Brought my dog here twice for a necrotic wound on her ear. They performed two surgeries for her and did great both times. Everyone who helped me and my pup were so kind and patient with me, answering all my questions with tons of knowledge. I called many times and emailed pictures to ask questions about her healing and they were always so nice and willing to help me. Everyone there including the reception, vet techs, and vets went above and beyond for me. Thank you everyone at VEST for taking care of my girl!

I don’t live in the area but I needed an ultrasound for my cat as soon as possible and they were able to take him in right away. They were able to tell me reasons why he might have stopped eating/drinking and established a plan to get him back to his old self. They were very accommodating to my countless anxious questions as well. Thanks to their expertise, my cat started feeling better right away.
