How to Save Money at Birdneck Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Johnson has been my dog's vet since she was 8 weeks old. Indy is now 10 years old, and for all of those 10 years Dr. Johnson and his staff have been nothing but professional, supportive, kind, empathetic, and exceptionally talented at making both myself and my little partner in crime feel safe and secure. Over the years they have seen us through: dental cleanings, skin infections, back and hip issues, and tumors that definitely weren't cancerous but you can best believe I'd already convinced myself they were and was having an internal meltdown. You can trust Dr. Johnson to be honest with you and to help you make the right decisions for your pet's health. Their care plans saved me a ton of money over the years (so they are definitely a worthwhile investment) and even without the plan, the services Dr. Johnson provides come at a fair and affordable price. In short: You won't find a better veterinary practice in Virginia Beach and the surrounding area.

We’ve been taking our 2 year old pup Birdie to Birdneck Animal Hospital since we got her, and continue to be amazed by the warm, friendly and expert care from Dr. Johnson and his team. Dr. Johnson is always kind, extremely knowledgeable, and engaging. We recently had a scare where our pup needed an X-ray to figure out what was going on with her stomach. The X-ray results didn’t come back until well after Birdneck Animal Hospital closed. Cate stayed after hours to wait for the results, and drove to our house in Norfolk at 8pm to personally deliver the medication needed. Talk about going above and beyond! I cannot begin to describe how meaningful it was to us, and appreciative we are to have Birdneck Animal Hospital and their team in our corner!

Dr. Johnson and his team are so patient and kind!! They explain the services and pricing before administering any treatment. I trust his opinion and always do what he suggests. They work around schedules to get your fur baby in as soon as possible and are understanding if things come up then have to cancel. I currently have 2 kittens they have been caring for and have used them for my 2 sweet cats before. Hands down the BEST Vet in the area.

I love Birdneck Animal Hospital - I got the recommendation from a neighbor who has a golden named Sailor. When I walked in, Sailor was featured as the pet of the month with her picture on the wall which was so cool! It is very easy to make an appointment there, and I was able to talk to Dr. Johnson and go into the exam room with Ziggy, my golden mix. We are new to Virginia Beach, and this is the first time I’ve been able to speak to a vet and go into the exam room since we brought Ziggy home almost two years ago which was amazing! Everyone was masked, so I felt very safe. Dr. Johnson took his time with Ziggy and made sure all of my questions were answered. From being in the room, I remembered some things I would have not mentioned if I was unable to go back with Ziggy. Dr. Johnson is a very caring doctor, and it is evident in how he treated Ziggy with kindness and compassion. I highly recommend Birdneck Animal Hospital - I’m very excited to have found such an amazing vet and staff including Amanda to care for Ziggy!!

I scheduled a checkup for my senior dog (13 yrs old) and we got to see Dr. Johnson who was incredibly caring and gentle to my aging pup. His assistant was just as impressive as she kept him calm and had an overall great read of the room, if my dog got antsy or uncomfortable, she would adjust and redirect him. Dr. Johnson gave us wonderful advice and offered affordable treatment plans as well. My experience at Birdneck Animal Hospital was excellent & it’s honestly a relief to have found them.
