How to Save Money at Academy Animal Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Academy Animal Care clinic is the BEST Animal Clinic I have ever been to. Dr. Ambrosio is so knowledgeable and patient, but most importantly knows the pet and client well enough to treat them with individual care and based on their needs. She works together to create the best plan for the care and wellness of her patient and at the same time, is honest with her opinion so the client can make the best decision for their pet. I cannot say enough great things about Dr. Ambrosio, the staff and the clinic overall. My pup is my first and I have made so many mistakes along the way and when dealing with other clinics. However, this is the first clinic that I find so easy to work with and truly feel like they care. A few months ago I was thinking about moving and I had already planned to make the one-hour drive back here for veterinary care. You do not find caring veterinarians like this every day. My pup and I are so fortunate to have found Academy Animal Care!!!

What a fabulous veterinary practice! We moved to Suffolk in 2020 and had been looking for a good vet ever since. My grandcat needed an urgent visit so my daughter took her chances and booked an appointment. She was so impressed by the customer service, care, and kindness of the staff, she encouraged me to make an appointment for our pack of four. We are SO GLAD WE DID! Dr. Brown got on the floor with the pups, offering belly rubs and kisses. All of the techs were patient and fun. They definitely love their jobs! The pooches were playful and happy with everyone, even our neurotic middle child. The cost was reasonable and no one tried to push services or products for profit. We definitely found our new home. Academy Animal CARE indeed!

Academy Animal Care is a caring, compassionate veterinarian clinic. Everyone there, from the front desk to the veterinarians, are wonderful. Dr. Council takes her time to explain things, is very kind and gentle with our dogs and we have never felt rushed. We would highly recommend Academy Animal Care.

Let me tell you! This place has gained a customer. I called on a whim Friday morning to see if they could see my 6 month old lab. She had consistently had diarrhea for a while, and I just wanted to be sure I was treating her correctly. My neighbor recommended this place as a full service vet a while ago due to a poor experience elsewhere. I decided to give it a try. Mia answered the phone. She was empathetic, patient, and wanted to help. Right off the bat, she asked if I had time to come in the same day. Worked us in. By the way, this is a new patient appointment. The staff were very professional, caring, and compassionate. The facility is very clean as well. They explained everything! I normally have follow-up questions---I had none. The next day, Mia called to check Brownie. I wasn't expecting that. So, thank you, Academy Animal Care. I would certainly recommend them for any vet needs.
