How to Save Money at Westwood Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Brought my dog Beanie in to get his nails clipped because he has an ingrown toenail. Every vet I’ve ever been to will explain if they recommend extra steps or treatments and the cost and allow you to weigh the options and decide what’s best. I spoke to multiple vets and decided to go to Westwood because they were closest and every vet I spoke to said the nail would need to be cut and removed and the option of antibiotics to prevent an infection. Westwood cut the nail, and let me know they could prescribe antibiotics and I agreed; however, without informing me or letting me know performed an exam on Beanie and charged me an additional $50 making a visit that should’ve been $50, $100. I found this strange considering I told them when I got paid and planned to bring Beanie in the following week for an exam, shots etc. This was definitely an unnecessary and secretive addition to a total of 15 minute visit that they clearly did for additional money rather than need. They didn’t even allow me to come back with Beanie and see what was being done, but did inform me they had to muzzle him. I saw other fur parents going back with their babies, but I wasn’t allowed back, AND an exam was just added to my hill that I’m not even sure really took place, nor did I approve of. They refused to remove the exam from my bill despite the fact I didn’t ask for it and wasn’t informed of it and since they don’t offer payment plans I was forced to pay the full amount then and there making me broke until pay day, which is inconvenient especially since it was not an emergency. I have never had a vet perform anything that costs extra without informing me and because of their greed wanting an additional $50 for this one visit, they will never again receive a dime from me for any of my beloved fur babies. I want to be informed, and respected as a human who isn’t made of money, and I also want what’s best for my babies. But I can’t go to a vet that I don’t trust and unfortunately this was very untrustworthy. A $15 nail clip turned into $109 without any conversation or additional information. I would rather go to a vet who can and will respect my pets as well as me and unfortunately Westwood is not that.

GREAT people! Extremely efficient, friendly, and professional team. Provided full information and options and a care plan for both our horse and dog and then called to check on how they were doing. Great care, truly concerned from a team that works like clockwork. 👍

Excellent service and friendly staff! We were a walk in on a Monday morning with our cat who was experiencing alarming symptoms through out the weekend. We were seen pretty quickly and provided updates often. We had never been here, but we will be returning to Westwood Animal Hospital!

Excellent Veterinary and Vet tech staff! The only clinic in the area with walk-in hours Mon-Saturday. They’ve saved me many a trip to the ER in Charlottesville. Took great care of my little old lady this morning, for which I’m very grateful!
