How to Save Money at Dulles South Animal Emergency & Referral Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I took my 6-month-old puppy to Dulles Veterinary South for a follow-up after he received surgery while we were in Egypt. My puppy was involved in an accident and had to have emergency foot surgery. To say the experience was infuriating would be an understatement. The veterinarian had zero interest in understanding the context of my puppy's prior treatment and quickly dismissed any information I shared about his surgery in Egypt. It was as if she was belittling treatment that was not influenced by the west. She barely looked at the x-ray’s before she gave her judgement. Instead of listening to my concerns and assessing my puppy's condition with care, she was more interested in pushing a ridiculous $8,000 surgery on me. This is a 6-month-old puppy who just had a major surgery! The way she casually suggested another procedure, without even exploring less invasive options or considering the stress on my dog, was utterly careless and unprofessional. I felt like I was dealing with a used car salesperson, not a trusted veterinarian. The level of disregard for my puppy's well-being and the blatant attempt to exploit me for an expensive surgery was infuriating. I can't believe this place has a license to practice. Avoid Dulles South Veterinary South at all costs if you care about your pets and your wallet. I certainly won't be coming back, and I'm warning everyone I know to steer clear of this place. What a disgrace!

Outstanding communication, education, patience and support. Took our cat in for severe bad breath and loose tooth. While sad to learn our cat had severe tooth decay and issues, this Vet and support staff walked us thru our options, explained the impact to our cat, and were incredibly supportive throughout the process. We’ll be back. 5/5

Spencer was rescued and adopted as an elder dog with some medical issues. And we would do it all over again. We had to make that hard decision of letting her rest after a long, long, life with the help of Dr. Luce and the rest of DSVC. I am personally still fighting through all the stages of grief at her loss recently (6/17/19). but having seen how Spencer had declined quickly due to kidney disease...We couldn't see her in pain and withdrawn. She gave us 4 wonderful years. My wife and I have another pet, Toby, to care for. He's been sad/depressed. I'm thinking of bringing him to DSVC/Aldie to be his primary care--after seeing how their staff cared for Spencer and gave their emotional support for us...I know he would be cared for just as well. This was our experience...not many will have the same, but for us... DSVC/Aldie/Emergency Care--was the best they could offer in a short amount of time. Thank you.

I am very thankful for Dr. Luce and the staff at Dulles South Animal Emergency. They were able to get my dog seen quickly. They were very professional, knowledgeable, and friendly. Dr. Luce was very thorough which helped me understand my options and I felt very confident that he had my dog's best interest in mind. You can tell they really care about their patients. Thank you Dr. Luce and staff for being there for my baby and easing her pain. You are valued and very appreciated!

I took my furry boy last night to Dulles South Animal Emergency & Referral Hospital. This was my first visit . My dog was having issues with his back legs and of course I was emotional because he is my boy and I didn't want him to be in pain. The staff was VERY caring, supportive and calm. They did an excellent job with explaining what they were going to do and asking me for permission to do more tests while being open with costs. If I ever have another emergency (hopefully I don't), but if I do, this will be my go to after hour care for all my pets!
