How to Save Money at Veterinary Referral & Critical Care
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I can't say enough about this place. My dog got kicked in the head by a horse and almost died and they saved her life. They also did a beautiful skin graft surgery on another dog who got a piece of wire wrapped around her leg and had Scar Tissue build up. They are compassionate caring and reasonably priced

Long ago, VRCC saved the life of my young lab who had been poisoned. For a relatively decent price ($4K) they did what probably few others could: sent bloodwork to poison experts, performed blood transfusion and kept my pup on IV’s for almost a week. Recently, VRCC saved my new rescue who needed multiple toys removed from his stomach. That process was a very difficult process yet flawlessly executed by VRCC staff. As a foster for several rescue charities, I have often waited 8-48 hours for vet service and no longer can find good local vet service—having to go to DC area or Virginia Tech in Blacksburg for urgent appointments for my many dogs. COVID blew up the vet industry with everyone adopting pets and then returning them pair-COVID. Given the state of the vet industry in our area with so many staffing issues, VRCC continues to work hard to do everything they—and few others—can. Prayers to all the patients and kudos to all VRCC vet staff. Thanks for filling an extremely important and more and more difficult need ❤️

DO NOT COME HERE! i came in due to my cat having a urinary blockage. i should’ve remembered her name but the lady who was asking me questions as they were checking my baby, made me feel like it was completely my fault. which there is no specific cause to urinary obstructions. she was super rude and talked down on me. they offered to do a procedure for a couple thousand dollars. which i ended up doing at a DIFFERENT facility who offered a way lower price. my cat also GOT FLEAS from this facility. i know this for a fact because a week prior i went to my primary vet and got a flea treatment done and checked for fleas. these guys ONLY CARE ABOUT THE MONEY!!

VRCC was absolutely wonderful to me and my dog. They took us in and were so kind and understanding of our needs and took immediate action. While it was a extremely scary situation Dr. Ditzler and Dr. Naff took the best care of him that they possibly could while giving me the upmost sympathy. He is a healthy boy and back to normal now. I highly recommend this practice and I cannot thank them enough for saving my dog's life!

We took our dying pup on July 4th. it was very busy and staff took pup for care immediately though it took hrs for vet to talk to us but our pup was taken care of while we wait. they had nonstop sick pets and staff maintained professional and kindness throughout. we ended up euthanized our pup the next day. Vet was patient explaining my pup illness despite working throughout the nite and staff was running around making sure pts were taken care of. waiting time has been long but cant complain as there are so many pets to tend to. but you prioritize taking care of pet needs first and discuss later to ensure every pt discomfort is tend to which is the most important for pet owner.Thank you so much for being there for our sick pets and heads off to you for ur kindness and patience and professionalism even on a crazy holiday night and God bless you all.
