How to Save Money at Integrative Veterinary Center of Richmond
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

RESPONSE UPDATE: When appointments need to be made so far in advance, why do you even ask for a NON-REFUNDABLE deposit? Furthermore, is it really necessary to run the charge, thus incurring a processing fee, when the appointment is made or could it be run 48-72 hrs prior when it's reasonable to believe that you are preparing for an appointment? I'd be curious to know how you "start preparing" for an appointment that's not scheduled to take place for at least two weeks? I also wonder why you don't process refunds, that you so "respectfully" grant at your discretion, as quickly as you process the deposit. You're mailing out a check?! Interesting.....sounds like "floating" to me. Frankly, this response sounds like it came straight from the playbook of a big corporate airline financial bean counter. We'd leave ZERO STARS if we could - we can't review our "experience" with this group because our cat died prior to the appointment. She died a full NINE days before the appointment. The very day she died and with tears in our eyes, we called the practice to cancel the appointment so they could rebook it. We were informed that a $25 "processing" fee was being withheld from the $180+ deposit charged just to make the appointment. Do we understand the request for a deposit because people NO SHOW their appointments? Yes. Do we understand a partial refund if a pet passes within 12-24 hours of the appointment? Yes. But an arbitrary "processing fee" for canceling an appointment nine days early because our pet died? Heartless. Bad business.

My senior dog has been treated over the last few years by Dr. Jones. I have been a steady dog owner for 50+ years and have never experienced the level of care, professionalism, and treatment options I have received at this practice. Moreover, my assessment and instinct of my pet has been respected and validated. I’ve never been rushed and always feel genuinely listened to. I’m quite impressed with the staff, especially the vet tech, Rose, who has assisted through my dog’s visits and surgery. It’s wonderful to feel such confidence in a provider. I am grateful and happy to travel a distance to get such quality care.

Seems like most Vet clinics have turned into primarily money making ventures. I became exasperated when my dogs were treated as just another number with our local vet. I feel like they abused what was a sacred contract between us when they failed to take appropriate care of my pets. After my small dog began having severe seizures (the local vet clinic couldn't have cared less and wanted an additional fee for "squeezing her in to evaluate her"), I decided something different needed to happen. I'm happy to say I found IVC. I feel like that sacred contract has been restored. Every single person who works there cares about the well-being of my Fur Babies. The front desk staff is the most professional I've ever encountered and the vets are prepared to offer holistic options. I gratefully and happily drive an hour and a half each way so my dogs can get cared for by people who actually care about us.

Everyone at IVC Richmond is kind and helpful. They are amazing with our two senior rescue dogs Buddy and Zoe. Zoe just had a dental procedure and came out of it beautifully, she feels so much better and is happy. Everything is well explained. We love Dr. Jones, thank you all for caring for our furbabies!

My dog was seen today by Dr Dayton. Tim my 3 legged hound dog is 12 with elevated kidney and liver values and painful which limits pain medication he can be on. She helped come up with a good plan for his pain management and medication that will help support his kidney and liver. I know he won’t live forever but I feel better having a plan to keep him comfortable and support him the best I can. All the staff was very nice. Thanks, IVC family.
