How to Save Money at Stahl Exotic Animal Veterinary Services
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The staff at Stahl are very caring and professional. We are so appreciative that there is an exotic vet who can care for our rabbits. We are able to schedule appointments within a reasonable timeframe and they have been helpful with troubleshooting emergencies over the phone to avoid an unnecessary and potentially costly visit.

My rabbits Baby and Sweet P have been going here for their annual check ups and nail trims. They also got neutered/spayed here which was a stressful thing for me but the staff always provided me with updates and were so kind through it all. Baby had to be checked into their emergency care a few days after his spay and the staff took the best care of him and were very informative through it all. I love my pets and Stahl Exotics has provided the best care!

Caring staff and doctors. They are a good sized practice that handles exotic pets. We take our rabbits there for neuter/spaying and regular checkup and services.

Dr. Carothers was great, and treated my elderly Guinea pig so well. She explained everything thoroughly and made sure I knew all the treatment options. The staff was very nice too! I have had bad experiences with taking guineas to other vets in the past, and this place was so much better and their doctors clearly know small mammals very well. Would highly recommend for Guinea pigs!

Our experience with Stahl's was not planned by any means. We live just over an hour away from Fairfax and our rabbit was normally seen at a vet closer to home. However, an out of nowhere emergency after 6pm this week found me in tears trying to find anyone who could see our girl Thump Thumps as soon as possible (we were calling places up to 2 hours away). A call to our own vet led to a referral to another emergency vet in VA who treated exotics but were too busy to see us, and 6 more referrals later, the receptionist (who I apologize for forgetting her name in my panic) at Stahl who answered the phone was the start to an amazing experience in what turned out to be a devastating night. The receptionist took all my info and came back to the phone to tell us to leave immediately and get her there. We walked in and they took her to the back immediately to assess her. We weren't waiting long at all before Dr. Katzenstein communicated so thoroughly beginning to end, everything they wanted to do, options we had for treatment, and answering many a questions I had that probably were a little all over the place given my state of mind. In the end, we were faced with very hard decisions and were supported by the Dr and Staff with such understanding and support the entire time. We ended up losing our baby that night and despite us being there well after they closed, we never felt rushed and we were given as much time as we needed to say our goodbyes. I am beyond devastated by the outcome, but we talked on our way home that it was probably meant to be everyone else turned us away because we don't think we would have had the same support, even from the vet who normally saw her. We have no other exotics in our home, otherwise we would be moving them all to Stahl immediately.
