How to Save Money at Little River Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I am honestly mind blown right now. After mentioning to the receptionist that I was coming to them based on a referral, somehow in trying to figure out a time to have my cat come in as a new patient, the conversation went from us figuring out the best time, to being put on hold so the receptionist can speak with the vet tech about whether Saturday would be an option, and when she came back on the phone, I was no longer allowed to schedule an appointment and would not be accepted as a new patient. I would love to speak with whomever is in charge if they read this.

We used Little River Vet for years but have been without a pet for a while. But we now have dog and cat and are so glad Little River (now Pender) is still available for the excellent care we had previously.

I'm deeply disappointed with this clinic. Dr. Judy Downs has a terrible attitude towards clients; she becomes angry at every question I ask her. It's evident that her main focus is on making money from clients, and she appears to care very little about the well-being of animals. When my cat's condition worsened, my husband called the clinic because Dr. Judy Downs had previously seen her and we needed advice on medication to help. However, she refused to speak with us, possibly because of my dissatisfaction with the way she had treated us during our last visit. Regrettably, my cat passed away shortly after.

I took my great dane to the clinic to be fixed years ago. She was only two years old. I wanted to see her the night of the surgery and was told I was unable. The next morning I was telephoned at work and told she was dead. An autopsy was done and she bled to death. They were aware she was in heat a few weeks earlier. Subsequently, I was notified by others that large dogs should not have that surgery so soon after heat. My heart still breaks about what happened. I loved the dog so much. In addition, they refused to pay the cost to get a new puppy. I paid over $2,000.00 for her. I did wind up getting a new puppy a few months later with no help from them. They tried to bill me after killing my beautiful girl. I would not suggest this clinic.

Dr. Downs and the team at Little River are great! I had several bad experiences with my previous veterinarian that mostly boiled down to me not feeling listened to. That has never been the case here and this team is why we travel 40 minutes for our visits. Every part of the team takes time to intently listen to my concerns and I feel my voice is heard and valued in the care my dog receives. Any time I have questions they're quick to answer. My dog gets her regular care here and Dr. Downs did her spay as well. I've had a couple of times where my dog needed to be seen quickly and they were able to accommodate her within what I know is a very busy schedule. I also tend to be pretty anxious when it comes to my dog and her care and they have always been great at talking me through everything to calm my nerves. From the front of the house to the doctor and back I've been very pleased with the care we get at Little River and would highly recommend them!
